Abstract This publication is the first in a three part series looking at HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, with the overall objective of providing a resource base on the most crucial issues to consider when looking at rural development in sub-Saharan Africa in a broad sense in the times of HIV/AIDS. It describes the impact of the epidemic as it has emerged over the last decades at different levels of the agricultural sector, namely the farming system level, the livelihood level, and the household level. In a further step, less well researched impacts on the agricultural estate sector as well as pastoralism are discussed. One overarching issue that emerges is the importance of gender attributes to adequately understand and address HIV/AIDS impact on agricultural production systems in general and household food security in particular - the topic at the centre of the second part of the series. The text ends with a discussion of HIV/AIDS in relation to other shocks that befall rural livelihoods and a call for more holistic research approaches that integrate famine and other disaster literatures with HIV/AIDS impact studies. It is followed by an annotated bibliography. HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa 7 Table of contents Abstract 7 Preface 11 List of acronyms 15 Key concepts 17 Part 1 – Overview 19 1.
