Thisneednotbesaidtoanypersonwhohashadexperi- enceinsimilarwork. Inattemptingtheproductionofacreditablehistoryof Rutlandcountythepublishersandthe editor did notunderestimatethediffi- cultiesof their task, andcametoitfullyimbuedwithaclearideaofitsmag- nitudeanddeterminationtoexecuteitinsuchamannerthatitshould receive thegeneralcommendationofallintowhosehandsitshouldfall. Itisbelieved thatthispurposehasbeensubstantiallycarried out,and that, while a perfect historicalwork hasneveryetbeenpublished, thisonewillbefoundtocontain sofewimperfectionsthatthemostcritical readerswillbesatisfied. Itisapartof theplansof the publishersin theproductionofcountyhis- toriestosecure, as far as possible,local assistance, eitheraswriters, orinthe revisionofallmanuscripts; theconsequencebeingthattheworkbearsalocal characterwhichcould nototherwise be secured, and, moreover, comes from thepressfarmorecompleteandperfectthancouldpossiblybe the case were it entrusted wholly to the effortsof comparative strangers to thelocalityin hand. In carrying out thisplan in thiscountytheeditorhasbeen tendered suchgenerousco-operationandassistanceofvariouskindsthattomerel}'men- tionallwhohavethusaidedisimpossible; thesatisfaction of having assisted in the production of a commendable publicenterprisemustbetheirpresent ^ 9 Introduction. reward.
