Editor’s Foreword
Although Friedrich Nietzsche lived and wrote during the second half of the
nineteenth century and although his comments were eminently relevant—
and clearly found an echo—then, much of what he wrote still has vibrant
meaning and relevance today. Even those who do not know much about the
philosopher have heard of the Übermensch, slave morality, the revaluation
of all values or books such as Beyond Good and Evil and Thus Spoke Zara-
thustra. This is somewhat surprising given the disrepute into which Nietz-
scheanism fell during and immediately following World War II. Something
in his writing strikes a sympathetic—or antipathetic—chord in many, so no
doubt the interest will survive well into the twenty-first century and beyond.
Indeed, this is even being expressed at present in a neo-Nietzscheanism and
a New Nietzsche.
The publication of a third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Nietzsche-
anism is certainly justified. It explores Nietzsche the man as well as Nietz-
sche the philosopher and even Nietzsche the concept. Among other things, it
describes his career and thought and presents earlier thinkers who influenced
his philosophy, contemporaries who either agreed or disagreed with him, and
others who interpreted (or misinterpreted) his philosophy. This is done first in
a chronology and an extensive introduction, then in considerably more detail
in a dictionary section which is full of concise but cogent entries. For those
who want to actually read Nietzsche’s work, the bibliography is an excellent
starting point; a wealth of books by commentators is also provided.
This considerably expanded edition, like both the first and second, was
written by Carol Diethe. A graduate of London University, Dr. Diethe has re-
searched, written, and lectured on Nietzsche for several decades. During her
career, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses on the impact of Nietz-
sche’s thought on European and world cultural history. Her publications in-
clude Nietzsche’s Women: Beyond the Whip and a translation of Nietzsche’s
On the Genealogy of Morality. Her biography of a key figure, Elisabeth
Förster-Nietzsche, Nietzsche’s Sister and the Will to Power, was published in
