Historic Aviation, Arms, Armour, Medals & Militaria, Stamps & Coins We have been holdinghistorical Militaryand Aviation sales since 2001 and these have become a highlight fixture on the international auction map. It was a comfortable and natural progression from ourearliest days valuingand sellingmilitaryand aviation books and documents to also include related pictures, prints, photographs and ephemera. This specialist service was logicallyextended furtherto create these distinctive biannual special sales that readilyincorporate arms, armour, medals and militaria, stamps, tokens and coins. Since those earlydays we have handled manysignificant militaryand aviation libraries, archives and collections, as well as historically important and unique items, a few highlights ofwhich are included in the followingpages. HenryMeadows is ourHead ofDepartment who has spearheaded these sales since joiningthe companyin 2011. Priorto this he had worked fora numberofauctioneers, includingSpinkofLondon and Dreweatts where he rose to be Associate and Head ofthe Medals and Militaria Department at just 25 years old. Amongthe highlights ofhis earlycareerwas the organisation ofthe first everpublic displayofthe Ashcroft VC Trust, Victoria Cross Collection, where he was privileged to handle manyVCs, includingthose ofthe famous Rorke’s Drift defenderColonel John Rouse Merriott Chard, and that ofRoyal FlyingCorps Pilot Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson, who shot down a Zeppelin overHertfordshire in 1916. Henryis a Memberofthe Royal Institute ofChartered Surveyors and a newlyfamiliarface on the BBC Antiques Roadshow, workingalongside Bill Harriman, Robert Tilneyand MarkSmith as a Militaria expert. South Africa 1877-79, one clasp,1877-8-9 (730. Pte R. Morse. 1/24th Foot.), toned nearlyextremely fine, 730 Private Richard John Morse born St George in the East, Middlesex1848, served with the 1/24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment ofFoot in South Africa and was killed in action at the Battle ofIsandlwana, 22nd January1879. Sold for£8,144 The MostEminentOrderofthe Indian Empire,K.C.I.E., KnightCommander'ssetofinsignia,neckbadge,goldandenamel; breaststar,goldandenamel,withgoldpin,extremelyfine, in 'Garrard&Co,London'caseofissue,withtwolettersfromthe CentralChanceryoftheOrdersofKnighthooddated1957detailing thereturnofthesetonthedeathofSirAlexanderN.L.Cater,K.C.I.E. andtheacquisitionoftheorderbythefamilyfor£20. SirAlexanderNormanLeyCaterK.C.I.E.(1880-1957),waseducatedat WellingtonCollegeandChrist'sCollege,Cambridge;heenteredthe ICS1903,servedinPunjab,Baluchistan,HyderabadandMysore; DeputySecretarytoGovernmentofIndia1919; ResidentatJaipur, 1925;AgenttoGovernor-General,MadrasStates;AgenttoGovernor- GeneralandChiefCommissioner,Baluchistan,1931-36. Sold For£5,182 H.M. 'K' ClassSubmarine. Apossiblyunique builder's concept design model byVickers, c. 1915, the ebonised carved and laminated hull, with keel, conningtowerand torpedo tube outlines, arranged in two halves, brass- pinned at the bow, stern, conning tower and fore and aft decking, one brass pin securingthe hull below the waterline, the uppersuperstructure unusuallyapplied with vertical rows ofpins, possiblyforplatingpurposes, the two half models when pinned togethermounted on a modern wood platform stand with turned brass pillar and keel cradle supports, the submarine with restored bow section, approx. 101 in (256.5 cm) long. Sold for£7,157 Supermarine Spitfire LFIXe. Afine precision scale model byPeterCooke, supremelycrafted and detailed down to the last rivet, depictingaircraft JE-J No. MK392 as flown byleadingBritish Ace Johnnie Johnson during1944 & 1945, ofmoulded resin painted in authentic camouflage colourscheme with comprehensive surface detailing, the definitive representation ofthe type, contained in perspexdiorama display-case with grass-effect base havingapplied makers label, wingspan 16 ins (40 cm). This model is accompanied bya copyofa typescript signed letterfrom AirVice-Marshall J.E. Johnson (his initials on his aircraft) referringto combat operations in which his "aircraft MK392 tookpart in 123 offensive patrols, includingthe Normandyinvasion, and shot down manyaeroplanes and was hit onlytwice, once bycannon-shell from an FW-190 and once byflakon the same day23rd August 1944"; the letterto the makerofthis model Peter Cooke dated 18th May1982. Sold for£2,344 An outstandingSecond World War1942 Immediate 'Malta' D.F.C. to Spitfire Ace Flight Lieutenant N.C. Macqueen, Royal AirForce who in his short careerwas credited for7confirmed Victories and scores ofprobable downed enemyaircraft, Killed in Action onlya few days afterwinninghis award, Distinguished FlyingCross, G.VI.R., reverse officiallydated '1942'. Provenance: Sold on behalfofthe family. Sold for£6,170 WWII Luftwaffe Crash-relicSouvenir. Arecovered airframe panel, c.1940, possiblypart tail plane section, of reinforced riveted construction havingpainted greyfinish with swastika emblem in black& white, mounted for displayon backing-board, 24 x24 in (61 x61 cm). Sold for£4,936 Chinese Sword. Ashort sword, the 63cm curved double fullersteel blade signed with 3 characters towards the tang, the reverse with armourers mark, with pierced brass. Sold for£2,714 Cuirassiershelmet. An early17th centuryCuirassiers steel helmet probablyEnglish c.1640, the rounded skull with raised comb, plume holderat the rear, pointed visorand upperand lowerbevors with frontline piece pierced with graduated bars forbreathingholes, with lockingcatches on the right, main edge bordered with engraved lines, retaining much ofthe original lining, 30cm high. Sold for£4,565 Medalsand Effects. Agroup ofeight to Lieutenant-Colonel C.E. Penny, 9th Jat Regiment, laterKing's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Sold for£3,948 Cannon. Agood pairofGeorge III period bronze cannon, each with flared muzzle, cast with three rings and twin trunnion, 68cm long, each on a lateroakfourwheel carriage. Sold for£6,910 WWII. ABritish Empire Medal & LloydsMedal forBraveryatSea presented to Stewardess Elizabeth Plumb, who served in R.M.S. Rangitane when the ship was torpedoed byGerman raiders disguised as Japanese merchant traders, although severelywounded Plumb carried on caringforthe wounded in the lifeboat, she refused medical attention byGerman doctors on-board the prison ship, havingbeen wounded fornearlynine hours with one doctorremarking "Don't English women evercry?". Sold for£3,702 WW1 - Imperial German AirForce - HalberstadtCLIV2-seat FighterBiplane. Arare & large fabric section souvenirfragment from an original survivingaeroplane, c. 1917, cut from the airframe during restoration duringthe 1980s. Sold for£6,416
