Description:
Review

"Come the bright, unwavering light of dawn, Hiram Grange and the Village of the Damned made for a damn fine and totally entertaining read that moved me in unexpected ways."

--Anton Cancre, Horror News

"This is the most balmy brilliant novella I've read this century and lucky me there is more to come." --Peter Mark May, The novelblog.com

"A seamless blend of wickedly dark humour and full-throttle horror, the series begins with great promise." --Dave Jeffrey, THE RISEN, BEATRICE BEACHAM, and FINDING JERICHO

"Jake Burrows has created a weird, disturbed, deeply troubled and darkly funny hero... Quirky, creepy -- way too much sick fun..." --Jonathan Maberry, multiple Bram Stoker Award-winning author of THE WOLFMAN and THE DRAGON FACTORY

"Twisted, thrilling, and thoroughly enjoyable. Pure pulp, in the best possible way." --Matthew Dow Smith, DOCTOR WHO, SUPERNATURAL:ORIGINS, and THE KEEP

From the Author

There are dozens of emails in my inbox that proclaim, "I love Hiram," a subject line that served as a quick identifier for the exchange of ideas, snippets of text, and rough drafts among the group of authors that I tenderly refer to as the Hiram Five. As we built Hiram Grange we tried to avoid Dr. Frankenstein's mistake of cobbling life together through the use of spare parts. We wanted Hiram to be unique, more the product of a Petri dish than a construct of other peoples' parts. As his odd lanky frame grew and developed, and his nuanced predilection to Jodie Foster started to manifest, we did indeed begin to "love" him. He became both everything that we are as well as everything that we are not. He shouldered our vilest obsessions yet demonstrated those traits (honor, bravery, sacrifice) that we would hope to possess. Most of all he has become the focus of our vicarious pursuits--a vehicle by which our (literally) wildest dreams may come true and our darkest fears may lurk.
I think it's only fair that I tell you up front that Hiram is far from perfect. He's a drug addict. He's an alcoholic. He's a licentious, irritable louse who would rather drink, smoke, and rut than do ANYTHING else. Furthermore, he's not much to look at. However, for all of his flaws, Hiram stands watch over the forces of evil that threaten to slip from the Abyss into our world. He endeavors to interdict the malevolent assault of creatures of shadow, and well... sometimes succeeds.
I'll admit that pitting a surly antihero against the forces of supernatural is not an entirely original literary trope. However, in creating Hiram and his world the Hiram Five sought to develop complex and flawed characters and then place them in a well researched and believable setting--even if that setting was, at times, fictional or speculative. In the end, The Scandalous Misadventures of Hiram Grange propels readers through a series of briskly paced and thrilling supernatural adventures featuring characters that will evoke a chuckle, grin, or snarl. Also, we hit the jackpot by signing on the exceptionally talented Malcolm McClinton as the artist behind the adventure. Malcolm's art graces the cover to this novel. In addition, Danny Evarts' original woodcut prints and book design add so much to this series. You're in for a real treat.
