Credit for my first exposure is due toagraduateseminaronmedicineandrhetoricledbyLesleyDean-Jones. My interest at the time lay chiefly in sophistic rhetoric and Pre-Socratic philosophy, andIwassurprisedathowmuchofbothweretobefoundin theCorpus, especiallyinthetreatiseknownasπερὶτέχνης,deArte,or,asI callitinthetitletothisbook,Ontheartofmedicine.Iwasfurthersurprised at how little scholarly attention had been devoted to de Arte. The major studies(Gomperz1910,Vegetti1964,Jori1996)wereextremelyvaluable,but Ihadthefeelingthatmuchmorewaslefttosay.Missingwasscholarship that preserved the insights of earlier studies while applying the methods ofanalyticphilosophythathaveprovensofruitfultothestudyofancient thoughtinthepastseveraldecades. Such is the aim of the present commentary. It does not aim to give the “last word” on de Arte. It does not aim to replace Gomperz’ learned literaryanalysisorVegetti’scomprehensivecomparisonofdeArtetoother Hippocratic works. Much less does it aim to invalidate the observations afforded by Jori’s “Continental” treatment of the text. Instead, I operate undertheconvictionthatdeArte,asaworkofsophisticrhetoricandPre- Socraticphilosophy,isdrivenbyargument,andthetoolsofAnglo-American analyticphilosophyareparticularlywellsuitedtoteasingoutthetanglesof theoftenverydenseandtechnicalargumentsweencounterindeArte.
