Vandoren, which began in 1905, is now one of the most popular makers of mouth-
pieces and reeds for clarinet and saxophone in the world. Began by Eugene Van
Doren (1873-1940), a clarinetist for the Paris Opera, the company did not start
really growing until his son, Robert Van Doren (1904-1996), took over the business
in 1935. In 1967, Bernard Van Doren (b. 1945), grandson of Eugene, took over the
company. During this time period, the company started making its most famous
(cid:38)larinet Reeds
mouthpiece for clarinet, the B45. Still today, Vandoren continues to be a prominent
manufacturer of reeds and mouthpieces.
(cid:38)larinet – Traditionals
The most widely played reeds in the world with a superiority proven over the years. These
reeds suit all styles of music. Traditionals are known for excellent response in all registers,
allowing for a pianissimo attack in even the highest notes. Vandoren Traditionals are ex-
tremely (cid:192)exible, allowing legato or staccato execution of large intervals while maintaining a
richness of tone and clarity of sound – all hallmarks of Vandoren reeds.

(cid:38)larinet – Special (cid:38)uts
The cut of the White Master and Black Master reeds are calculated to suit the characteristics
of German system clarinet mouthpieces. Black Master reeds have a larger and thicker cut than
White Master reeds. V-12 reeds are cut with a thicker heel and tip plus a longer pallet resulting
in a deeper, richer sound and increased the longevity of the reed. 56 Rue Lepic reeds are de-
signed from thicker cane with a heel taper similar to German-style reeds emitting a rich, centered,
and extremely pure sound while providing maximum stability and quick response in all registers.

Sa(cid:91)ophone Reeds Java reeds are specially cut for the Jazz saxophonist. The New Java RED is made as
the original Java but with a (cid:191)le cut. It offers more (cid:192)exibility but retains a full, rich, centered
sound. ZZ reeds have an immediate and responsive free-blowing characteristic without
sacri(cid:191)cing the brightness or tone quality required for Jazz music. V-12 reeds are a great
classical reed. They offer precise attack, controlled high tones, and a warm velvety sound.
V16 reeds have a thicker tip and a longer pallet. Their sound tends to be more brilliant,
percussive, and particularly adapted to all the new styles of music.
