Acknowledgments We first began planning this volume in the year 2000; one measure of how long it has been in the works is that it takes two hands to count the number of children who have been born to the authors, collectively, during the period this book was in preparation. Our first thanks must go to all of the authors whose work is included in this volume, some of whom have been involved from the very beginning and who have shown remarkable patience as the vol- ume took form and changed shape several times over the years. We equally thank authors who joined us relatively late in this process, sometimes on fair- ly short notice, to fill slots vacated by authors who moved on to other proj- ects. We are also grateful to those who at different moments were involved in some way with this volume but who do not appear in the final product, or who were unable to participate although they expressed support. These include Rudi Colloredo-Mansfeld, Guillermo de la Peña, Andrés Guerrero, Tanya Ko- rovkin, Brooke Larson, David Nugent, Galo Ramón, Susana Sawyer, Carol Smith, and Steve Striffler. Their ideas and insights have significantly improved the quality of the final product. We are especially grateful to Lyman Johnson, .d who carefully looked over the manuscript and suggested ways to rethink the e vrese book’s structure. Peter Kracht and Deborah Meade at the University of Pitts- r sth burgh Press have shown sustained enthusiasm for the project, and our thanks g ir llA go to Peter, Deborah, and their colleagues at the Press, as well as to the anony- .ss mous readers who offered provocative comments and suggestions that helped e rP h make this a much better book. g ru b sttiP fo ytisre vin U .7 0 0 2 © th g iryp o C Highland Indians and the State in Modern Ecuador, edited by A.
