Features at this year’s conference included a single-track program with 46 technical papers selected from 317 submissions, four keynote talks by renowned experts from academia, two tutori- als from industry, five workshops,a student research symposium, and a user/industry symposium. Asinrecentyears,alargenumberoftechnicalpapersweresubmittedforconsidera- tion,coveringsixtopicareasoffocus:algorithms,applications,architecture,communi- cationnetworks,mobile/sensorcomputing,andsystemssoftware.Inreviewingthe317 submissions,weusedatwo-phaseapproachasdoneoverthelastfewyearswithHiPC. AfirstscreeningpasswasmadethroughallpapersbytheareaViceChairstoidentify papers that were clearly out of scope for the conference, either because the topic did not fit the conference or the paper was of a survey nature, without original research content.Afterthefirstpass,theremaining285submissionswerereviewed,seekingat leastthreereviewsfromProgramCommitteemembers.Anumberofexternalreviewers alsoprovidedreviewsforpapers.Atotalof978reviewswereobtainedforthepapers. ForpaperswithsignificantlydifferingopinionsamongProgramCommitteemembers, e-mail discussions were used to find consensus. Finally 46 papers were selected for presentationin8sessions. Oneoutstandingpaperwasselectedforthebestpaperaward.EachareaViceChair first nominated one or two of the best papers from their area. These papers and their reviews were studied by the Vice Chairs, who then made their recommendationsfor the best paper award. Based on the recommendations from the Vice Chairs, the pa- per“ScalableMulti-coreswithImprovedPer-corePerformanceUsingOff-the-Critical PathReconfigurableHardware,”authoredbyTameeshSuriandAneeshAggarwal, was selectedforthebestpaperaward. Thisyear’sprogramfeaturedkeynotepresentationsfromfourdistinguishedspeak- ers: Wolfgang Gentzsch on the European distributed supercomputing infrastructure, DavidPelegonnetworkedcomputers,MaryWheeleronacomputationalenvironment for subsurface modeling, and Laxmikant Kale on the “the excitement in parallel computing.” The quality of the technical program is critically dependent on the efforts of the Program Committee members in providing reviews for the submitted papers.
