SurveystookplacefromAprilthroughSeptemberatsiteslocatedinAdams,Douglas,Franklin, Grant,LincolnandKlickitatcounties.MostsitesarelocatedintheColumbiaBasinEcoregionin thesteppevegetationzonesofWashington.ThehabitatattheRockCreeksite (KlickitatCounty),isintheOregonoak-ponderosapinevegetationzone. Avarietyofsurvey areas,typicalofthehabitatsfoundateachsite,werechosenforthesurveys.Areasoutsideofthe BLMpropertyboundarywerealsosurveyedifitseemedtheareawouldcontributetothe understandingoftheherpetofaunaontheBLMpropertiesand/orifthoseareasprovidedeasier accessorbettersurveyconditions. Fivesurveymethodswereused.Visualencountersurveyswereconductedduringtheday.They involvedwalkingthrough habitatssearchingonthesurfaceandundersurfacedebrisforanimals. Visualencountersurveyswerealsousedinaquatichabitatstosearchforeggs,larvaeandadult animals.Adipnetwasusedtocapturelarvalamphibiansinaquatichabitats. Roadsurveyswere conducted,bothduringthedayandatnight,forsnakesandanurans.Callsurveyswereconducted forbreedinganurans.Aquaticfunneltrapswereusedatsomesitestocaptureaquaticamphibian larvae.Methodswerechosentooptimizedetectionofeachspeciesatasite. Twohundredsixty-sixanimalswererecordedandmappedduringthe1998fieldseason.This includedsevenamphibianandtwelvereptilespecies.Recordsincludetheamphibiansand reptilesthatwerefoundduringsitesurveysandalsothosefoundwhiledrivingtoandfromthe surveysites.Informationpertainingtolifehistory,weather,habitat,microhabitatandlocation wascollectedforeachanimalfound.Pointlocationsweregeneratedforeachanimalusing UTMs.ThisinformationwasenteredintoExcelspreadsheetsanddistributionmapswere generatedusingGIS. Informationcollectedduringthesesurveyswillbeusedinthestate-wideprojectdocumentingthe amphibiansandreptilesofWashingtonState.
