Thedescriptionalongwithalinediagram(Fig. 1)ofits, habit,habitat,floweringandfruitingtime,anddistributionof the taxon in Indiahavebeenelaborated. Synotisalatus: (Wall, ex DC.)Jeffery & Chen,Y.L. in Kew Bull. 39(2): 308. 1984. (Asteraceae); Hajraetal. FI. of India 13: 287, 1995. Senerio alatus Wall, ex DC.; Hook, f., FI.Brit.India3:353, 1881. Aperennial greytomentose rhizomatous herb, upto 80cmlong,stout,rhizomewoody.Leavessubrosulate,ovate- oblong, sessile, acute-acuminate, base sub-auriculate, 12-19x7-9cm,hairybeneath,uppermostleavessmallerinsize at base, sessile. Head yellow, inconspicuously radiate, c. 5-7 cm long, involucre cylindrical, densely hairy; bracts 5-7,linear-lanceolate,7x1 mm. Rayflorets2-3,2-3 mmlong, mm unequal, shorter than styles; disc florets c. 4 long. mm Achenes greyish, c. 1 long, pubescent; pappus ofpale, mm scarbidshairs, c.4.5 long. Leaves alternate to more orless opposite, sessile; mm laminanarrowlyelliptictoelliptic-oblanceolate,3-6 long, mm 0.8-1.5 wide,apexacute,marginsentire,surfaceshirsute; stipulesminute,membranous,marginsciliate.Flowers5-12, in densely clustered pseudoaxillary cymes, bracteate; bractsminute.Flowerssessilepentamerous,yellowishgreen. Sepals5,free,unequal;outer2comparativelylonger,oblong, mm 1.5-2.1 long,obtuse,withnon-membranousmargins;inner mm threelanceolate, 1.5-1.9 long;outersurfaceinupperpart coveredwithshortorlong,stiff,straighthairsmixedwithuncinate hairs,perigynouszoneexternallydenselycoveredwithuncinate hairs. Petals 5, rudimentary, free, setaceous, alternating with sepals. Stamens 2, opposite to longer sepals, free; filaments minute; anthers oblong. Styles minute,bi-lobed; lobes shortly mm divergent. Fruits ovate, 1.4-2.1 long, with membranous pericarp, almost equal to or enclosed by calyx. Seeds mm subglobose,0.6-0.75 indiameter,browntobrownishblack. & FI. Fr.:February-March. Specimen examined: india: Haryana, Fatehabad, 16.ii.1963.N.C.Nair26009(BSI).Rare. Distribution: india: Haryana; Europe,Africa, Central Asia,Pakistan. H. cinerea DC. canbeeasilydistinguishedfromother Indian species of the genus in the presence of 5 unequal sepals (2 outer long, 3 inner short), with non-membranous marginsandperigynouszoneexternallydenselycoveredwith uncinate hairs; stamens 2, situated opposite outer sepals.
