The Canadiana Collection contains the finest quality coins (from the early issues of the Confederation through the mid-twentieth century) that we have ever seen. In fact, it contains more ‘finest known” examples than any other Canadian collection ever formed! That is speaking volumes, as Heritage has sold several world famous collections of the coins of our Northern neighbors recently (including Belzberg, Dominion, and Wellington), as well as hundreds of individual rarities from the earlier Norweb and Pittman collections. Over our four decades in the rare coin business, we thought that we had seen it all in Canadian coinage – and we never expected to sell any comprehensive collection of rarities in finer condition than the stellar collections just mentioned. As soon as we examined the exquisite rarities in the Canadiana Collection, we instantly knew that these were the best of the best. When collectors of Canadian coinage brag about pedigrees in the decades to come, the Canadiana name will be at the head of the top tier. We never expect to see another collection with as many finest known coins with so many distinguished pedigrees. As you would expect with one of the greatest collections ever assembled, every Canadian rarity is present (and here we will point out that the consignor kept a few of his treasures, so the auction is not complete). But here you will find all three 1936 “Dot” coins in the finest grades, the finest known 1890-H half dollar, a 1921 half dollar in MS66, and a 1921 five cents in MS 67. Perhaps the most impressive section is the astonishing offering of Victorian quarters and halves. Thirty years of effort have produced a collection of exceptional quality, of a level so consistent and so high as to almost be unbelievable. Yet it is there to be seen and to be appreciated. Please join us in New York and see if you don’t agree! If you will be participating from home, we encourage you to use either – or both – of our exclusive bidding platforms: the Interactive Internet™ and HERITAGE Live!™ You can also participate by telephone, mail, fax, or agent. Minute doubling is evident on the 185, but the 9 is normal. The reverse has a bold die crack inside the inner beaded circle, from 12 o’clock down to 8 o’clock, through the left upright of the N in ONE, and through the E in CENT. This incredible coin has brilliant orange mint color with frosty luster. The surfaces are pristine and nearly perfect. The Norweb Collection included several 1859 Cents, none better than MS65 Red and Brown. Similarly, the finest Dominion Collection example graded MS64 Red and Brown, and the finest Belzberg Collection coin graded MS64 Red. This incredible Premium Gem is the only MS66 that PCGS has certified regardless of color designation (7/09). It is prob- ably the finest known example of the date. Out of 1.5 million pieces struck, this is the sole highest-graded example certified by PCGS (7/09); not only is it the lone survivor awarded the MS66 des- ignation by that service, but it retains fully Red surfaces, actually rich copper-gold and orange with peach overtones. Victoria’s hair is finely wrought. Scattered small marks and tiny isolated areas of deeper color are visible on either side. A leading Canadian dealer had this to say about this piece, “It is the finest Victoria Cent, of any date, that I have ever seen.”In sum, a rare opportunity to obtain a fantastic representative—the finest the issue has to offer.
