We again offer thousands of exciting lots for your bidding consideration, all of which are online at ha.com/coins with descriptions and full-color, enlargeable images. We invite your careful inspection, research, reflection, and bidding! among the outstanding consignments can be found The Grundy Collection, selections from The deb-ann Collection (with his u.S. coins being offered in our Fun 2009 catalogs), and the don Kagin Collection of Multiple Talers. The Grundy Collection is one of the top collections of silver world crowns ever assembled. renowned for both diversity and quality, over 500 crowns include significant offerings from Sweden, norway, italy, France, Great britain, the German States, and Switzerland. Mostly assembled over the last 35 years, the Grundy Collection demonstrates what can be accomplished with a fine eye and decades of dedicated collecting effort. The consignor of the deb-ann coins has been a serious collector for more than a quarter of a century. his interest started with the GSa sales of Carson City dollars, and ultimately turned to the pursuit of early american coinage and world coins. Many significant rarities are among the items he consigned to this sale. The consignor loved history and art, and was able to indulge his passion for the finest. he always sought the best coin possible coin, because he understood that when the time came to sell, there would always be a market for the best. don Kagin, the consignor of numerous magnificent Talers, and multiple Talers, was kind enough to send along his thoughts on his historic collection. i found his story so compelling that it follows in its entirety: “As a numismatic historian growing up in the industry, I became fascinated by the large and ornate European Talers some 50 years ago, when Dad (A.M. “Art” Kagin) opened a box he had just received from foreign coin dealer Hans Holzer. Pointing out a 1486 Taler of Sigismund of Tyrol, he taught me about the origins of the first Talers. During my early employment most of these pieces were, even in high condition. To obtain a wonderfully repulsive Leopold “The Hogmouth” Taler in Gem condition for a few hundred dollars was a thrill. What was also curious was that foreign dealers did not seem to place as much of a price premium on high quality coins as did the U.S. dealers, thereby enabling me to purchase more. Without the resources to collect everything, I soon narrowed my pursuit to the scarcer multiple Talers—particularly triple-Talers and larger. Who could afford to own such large pieces 400-500 years ago? How cumbersome were they to handle? I tried to limit my purchases to those with substantial eye appeal, so I ultimately acquired a small number of exceptionally pleasing pieces over the years. I have less time to enjoy these large and elusive silver artifacts today, so I am content to let others treasure them. Who knows, when I retire in 30 years, I just may start a new collection” Donald H. Kagin, Ph.D. december, 2008 among many wonderful ancient coins, i must point out a few exceptional roman coins. a pair of “Fleur de Coin” examples (a gold roman imperial aureus of lucius Verus, minted 161-169 a.d., and an aureus of aelius Caesar, minted between 136-138 a.d., and from the John Whitney Walter Collection) have been receiving much attention. a third impressive item falls in the tradition of ancient coin medallions; this marvelous piece of great importance is a unique silver medallion of hadrian augustus (a.d. 125-128), in extremely Fine grade. Considered a masterpiece of ancient portraiture at 33.5 mm in width, the obverse has been judged one of the finest among the entire roman coinage, and the reverse (back side) features a delightful mythological scene. From circa 220 other consignors, we have many other wonderful coins for your consideration. our nyinC auction contains over three hundred lots of russian coins with numerous rarities including an MS63 1796 albertus rouble of Paul i, and a 1702 novodel medallic 7 roubles of Peter i. our british section has more than 200 lots of select items… an oliver Cromwell 1658 Crown in MS64 nGC, a George i Crown 1723-SSC MS63 nGC, and a George ii Crown 1741 MS63 nGC. The Chinese section is also loaded, with gold, silver, and copper rarities from the Chinese empire through the People’s republic. included are some of the large modern 5 ounce, 12 ounce, and 1 Kilo gold coins. We also have major offerings of South africa, Mexico, France, italy, and many other countries. We are also offering over 1,400 lots in our Final Session containing many wonderful coins valued somewhat less than those in the Signature Sale. They will be sold in a separate catalog, in an internet only sale, on Tuesday, January 13. These coins will be available for viewing in new york from Saturday, January 3-Tuesday, January 6. They will also be available for viewing on the internet at ha.com. images, descriptions, and prices realized from heritage’s previous numismatic auctions – some two million lots – are available in the Permanent auction archives at the heritage website, ha.com. i wish you the best of luck with your nyinC bidding, and extend my invitation to join us in the big apple for this exciting auction and great show. you can also participate successfully through the internet at ha.com, by telephone, mail, fax, agent, or through our heriTaGe live! bidding system (available at ha.com, this brings you to the auction floor through the internet).
