Normandy let me discover it slowly. After all, if you’re beguiling someone, there’s no need to hurry. I found a kind of quintessence; in a minimum of space a maximum of riches. Many different realities melded together, conversing amongst themselves in hushed tones: river and sea, hedgerows and forest, abbeys and factories, marshes and cliffs, birds and boats. And the ever-changing light. And many more than fifty shades of grey. And the sun shining, more often than you would believe and with more variation than the always- the-same-glaring-yellow of the Mediterranean. And the men and women, less aloof than people say. And the history of France, England and the Vikings found in all directions. Eric ORSENNA 3 4 Heritage CHAPTER M an’s cities need monuments, otherwise, what difference between a town and an anthill? Victor Hugo 5 welcome to NoRmANdy 6 Abbey Trail Local Producers In the rain Normandy Cider A Vie w o f th e S ein e A land of conquests and homecomings, where green landscapes meets a blue sky… Normandy covers a vast area. Welcome! Come a little closer, this is Normandy; towering alabaster cliffs separate the land from the ocean. Across the River Seine they continue south in a patchwork of valleys and streams. Normandy is a hidden world, a land cherished by its people, irrigated by its rivers. It gradually reveals itself along roads dotted with charming thatched cottages. The countryside seems even more picturesque than in our childhood memories at times. Visitors are overwhelmed and awed by how perfect a place it is. Our edifices, the abbeys and chateaux, serve to remind us that this is where our history was forged. Writers, painters, chefs: these people are living proof that in Normandy we take time to enjoy life. 7 NoRmANdy’S Diamonds and pearls 8 What richness Varied as it is immense, it is by turning off down a footpath or being inquisitive that you truly discover the wonders of our vast and varied heritage. We are so possessive of it that it’s practically kept secret! Apart from the countless chateaux and manor houses, both on and off the beaten track, our towns boast a wealth of outstanding architecture as well. Our temples and churches bear witness to a region well- versed in both Catholic and Protestant worship. But maybe you’ll be more interested in the places which formed the hub of the French textile industry in the 19th century, or in our military history, or our ancient waterways. Whichever direction you take, you will find a land steeped in history. AN ERA To interest everyone A land steeped in history With 2000 years of history and abundant reminders of times past. From Antiquity, through the Middle Ages and the Industrial Revolution until now, when the region is home to modern 21st century towns and cities, exploring the Pays de Caux-Seine Valley means a journey through human evolution itself. Discover our heritage the Pays de Caux-Seine Valley boasts 19 of the 810 listed monuments in France, 11 châteaux and 8 manor houses. Many are still private residences not open to the public. However, some are visible from public roads and some are open for guided tours. Discover the magnificent brick-and-flint, timber-framed and cross-braced manor houses and châteaux that are so characteristic of the region. We are proud of our heritage and hope you will appreciate it yourself. As Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, and who grew up in the family château in Mirville, might have put it; “C’est une symphonie!” (“It’s a symphony!”) 9 A Moendi etvhaee lfi rfsets twiveaelk etnadk es opfl aMce eaaych year Saint-Wandrille-Rançon ‘A river runs through it’ The village is named after both Fontenelle Abbey’s founder and the river that runs through it. The abbey has made the village famous since it is one of the only abbeys still inhabited by Benedictine monks. Discover the wonders hidden behind the abbey’s walls during a guided tour. A walk around the village would allow you to enjoy its many charms and attractions including the fish-farm, the 11th century roman church and the water-mill. St. Wandrille-Rançon’s rich heritage will certainly appeal. tells u s m o r e a b o ut Samuel Craquelin landscape architect th e Fo nte n elle “The project dates back to the early 2000’s. « . There was a desire to get the River Fontenelle back into. I was approached by the town to work on the project between Caudebec and St. Wandrille’s Abbey. This took a lot of work, obviously, but today the Fontenelle is back in its fossil bed, this was in itself quite an undertaking administratively-speaking, but equally extraordinary for the landscape! We have rediscovered the valley bed quite unknown to the general public, and in the middle, a river which will helps to open up new horizons to walkers; in one direction, the little church of Rançon, in another an ancient poplar grove and the marshes, which today welcomes joggers to its fitness trail. Finally, we’re offered a magnificent view of the Brotonne Bridge. Following the river we come across the village of W St. Wandrille with the abbey in the background. v I E We tried to make the most of the water, pastureland, marshes and wooded slopes. All the fixtures are E R simple, very rural. The fencing is in a rustic style and the pathways are made of aggregate from the River T N Seine. Today walkers, cyclists and fitness fans all benefit from an exceptional setting alongside the River I Fontenelle at St. Wandrille”. 10
