The Alhambran 2 Our Supreme Chaplain SPEAKS OUT by Rev. Msgr. Ricardo E. Bass Monsignor Bass can be reached by e-mail at [email protected] My dear friends, Lent is upon us. The question always becomes: What should I give up during Lent? or What should I do extra during Lent? I would suggest that there are a number of answers to either or both of these questions. What should I give up during Lent? The usual response has been: meat or liquor or candy, etc. However, we can all practice small ways of giving up something during Lent – for example, each Friday of Lent I will give up passing judgment on other people – each Wednesday of Lent, I will give up gossip – each Monday of Lent, I will give up misusing the name of the Lord in any way. It is true that we may not become perfect at any or all of these – but these are beginnings. Most of us are in the habit of passing judgment or gossiping or misusing the name of the Lord. However, habits can be changed. It takes a long time to undo a bad habit but it can be done. Lent is a good time to begin changing some of those bad habits in our lives for the better. What should I do extra during Lent? The usual response has been: give money to the poor or be nicer to my family, etc. However, there are other “extras” we can do during Lent that will assist us in growing in the Lord: we can read a little more Scripture than we have in the past or even take part in a Scripture class – we can write a note to people who have been important in our lives and thank them – or we can spend time with friends or relatives we haven’t seen for awhile. Simple acts – but very important expressions of our concern for those around us. The list of what we “give up” or “do extra” during Lent can go on and on. The important thing: that we do something to grow in our relationship with the Lord. Considering all He has given each of us – there is so much more we could do in His name so that others could more clearly see Christ present in our lives. We have a choice: sit back and do nothing throughout this Lenten Season or make the effort not to let another Lent “pass us by” without having somehow grown in our love and understanding of the Lord. This is the only Lent 2012 there will ever be – we should take advantage of it. Volume 56, No. 2 The Alhambran 5 Letters to the Editor Letter to the Editor If you have never been to an executive board meeting you are missing a great opportunity to see eight individuals working together for a common cause. Unlike caravan meetings, where the goal is to get to the “oasis”, these dedicated leaders are fully committed to the business of making Alhambra a continued success. This board is well organized with detail information prepared so that all discussion and motions are fully analyzed, thought through, and are not haphazardly rushed to get passed. Through the leadership of our Illustrious Supreme Commander Andre Beauchamp, this meeting was kept focused and moved swiftly through all the business of the day. There were items that all could not agree on and some discussions were heated but were not made personal and each member of this board maintained their position as “Catholic Gentlemen” to the highest regard. Our astute and long time Executive Director Roger Reid made sure that proper protocol and procedures were followed at all times. He intervened with his wisdom and extensive knowledge when necessary to assure all that the facts and policies were implemented correctly. Sometimes he can be so poetic, but that’s why we love him. As we all know our Order in is trouble, low membership, lack of incoming funds, exploding expenses, unpaid per capita and our latest problem a destroyed roof at the headquarters to name a few. My personal observation is that our Order is in the best hands possible. There is much work to be done and at the end of the day I know I will be sleeping good tonight knowing that our organization is in the hands of this board. It was an honor and a privilege to sit in on such a meeting. God bless this Alhambra.
