That pattern, my friends, is an ever-increasing love of imagery most foul. As a child, demons and monsters and devils of all sorts consumed his every waking hour and serenaded him through the night. But what would be the best way for this neophyte to express his 6 love? The options were many. His eventual choice: paper and pencil, and a little paint, too. Armed with his visual encyclopedia of artists past, a firm hatred of humanity, and the desire to dominate, Jim set off into the gaming world where he slaved tirelessly for companies such as Wizards of the Coast on their Magic: the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons lines, and Upper Deck Entertainment on their World of Warcraft game. Jim has also done work for periodicals such as Heavy Metal and Dragon Magazine. At the present time, Jim lives a comfortable life with his girlfriend, Aimee, in a house full of that imagery most foul, which makes him happiest of all. 7 8 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A debt of gratitude, payment of which comes through the making of the unholy, is due to Kurt, Mark, and Thomas for their undying devotion to all things evil, vile, and loathsome. Their pure disgust with humanity is a bottomless well from which I draw constant motivation. I also observe my obedience to all creators of darkness. Whether their craft stimulates the visual or the auditory, my senses have forever reveled in their sin, and it’s been joyous. I would like to thank Thomas, Prof, Michael P., Jeremy J., and Jim P. for personally helping me to create better artwork in one fashion or another. I would also like to thank all the people at Impact Books for giving me the opportunity to do this book and the creative freedom that every artist dreams of. Thanks to Donato, Brom, and E.E. Knight for their written contributions to this book. Finally, and most importantly, thank you to Aimee for being the perfect human being. 9 DEDICATION This book is dedicated to Keith Parkinson. An artist of tremendous skill and knowledge is a rare and unique thing, but an artist who is willing to share those attributes with novice artists is practically an anomaly. Keith was a polished gem in a landscape often tarnished by soot and smoke. He was one of my earliest influences and continued to influence me throughout his career, a career that was tragically cut short. I know that I, along with all of my colleagues in the fantasy art world, will continue to turn to his work for inspiration, and remember him fondly. 10
