INTRODUCTION During myrecent survey ofSouthernVietnameseOdonata,manyinteresting species havebeendiscovered.Theregional faunaispeculiar forthehighaveragenumberofen- demics,associatedwithmountainstreams. KARUBE(2000,2001)andHAMAlAINEN & KARUBE (2001a, 2001b) brought onrecordalready somenewinteresting species fromthisarea.Here,anewHeliogomphus isdescribed. HELIOGOMPHUS CHAOI SP. NOV. Figures1-14 Material.—HolotypeS'.southernVietnam,LamDongprov., 15kmfromBaoLoktoHo-chi-minh, 6-V-1997,depositedinKanagawaPrefecturalMuseumofNaturalHistory,Odawara, Japan.— Paratypes: samelocality asholotype,1 9.5-V-1997; - 2S, 12, 16-VI-1996;- 63.32,3I-V/1-VI-2002;- 2(5, 6-V1-2002. All H.Karubeleg. Etymology, - Dedicated tothe memoryofthe latedoyenofChineseodonatology.ProfessorDr Chao Hsiu-fu. MALE. — Head black withgreenish yellowmarkings; baseofmandibleandgena palegreen;labiumwhitishyellowwiththeapexbrown;labrumdarkbrownwithapair 434 H.Karube ofdorsaldrop-shaped markings whichis thinattheinnerpartandbroadendlaterally; anteclypeus brown;postclypeus black;antefronswithabroadbandatthecrest;vertex notdeveloped; occiput black, ratherroundly raised. Thorax. — Prothoraxblack, withapairofyellowspotsnearthelateralapices, with apairof smallspotsadjacent eachotheratthemiddorsalpartofmedianlobe. Heliogomphuschaoisp.n. 435 numwithatriangularventralspot;mesepimeronwithamedianstripe whichstopsclose toposterior margin; metepistemum withbandtaperedtodorsad; metepimeronlargely greenishexceptformetapleural suture;poststemum greenish yellow;outsidesofcoxae yellowish. Legs ratherlong, black. Wings hyaline; nodalindex: forewings with 13-16antenodalsand9-12postnodals, hindwings with10-15antenodalsand 10-13postnodals; pterostigmabrown,expanded atthemiddle,2.2-2.Sand2.5-3.0mminlengthinfore-andinhindwing, respectively. Abdomen.— Black withgreenishyellow markings; 1stsegmentwith abandat ventralhalf,withthintriangularmarkings atthedorso-posterior area;athinlongitudi- nallineruns onthedorsalcarinafromtheanteriorborderofthe2ndtotheendofthe 7thsegment;segment2 withlateralmarks attheauricleandwithdimventralband,the latteris connectedwithmedio-posterior markingnearborder;3rdto8thsegmentswith asmallspotonbase,9 to 10thsegmententirely black. Caudalappendages darkbrownandslender.Superiorappendage darkbrownexcept forawhitishapical half, forcipate with theapex strongly curledupwards, with strong lateralspines atthebasal 1/5andalsowithbroadlatero-ventralprojections atthebasal half.Inferiorappendages very widely divaricated,thelobetapered apicad andrather curvedupwards, apex withadorsalspine. Genitalia. — Anteriorhamuleinvisibleinlateralview,strongly inclinedbackwards andcrossedinnerpartof posterior hamule,slenderandlong, thinnerfromthemiddle, stronglyhookedbackwards attheapex;posteriorhamuliratherbroad,bill-shaped,with apex triangularly pointedanteriad.Vesicle developed,expanded dorso-anteriorly,with ashallowmediannotchattheanteriorarea;stemslightly bent;middlesegmentrobust, tapered toapex;distalsegmenttrumpet-shaped; posterior lobesemicircularly protrud- ed, withsmalltubercullarapex. Measurements (mm).— Abdomen(incl.app.)31.7-34.1,hindwing26.7-28.5 inlength. FEMALE. — Maculatepatternsimilartothoseofmale.Greenishyellow markingsof labrummoredeveloped; vertexwithstrongspines atthesmallridgebehindeach lateral ocellus, andwithapairofvestigial spots attheposterior slope ofvertex. Wingshyaline;nodalindex: forewingswith 14-16antenodalsand 10-13postnodals, hindwingswith11-12antenodalsand 10-13postnodals; pterostigmabrown,expandedat the middle,2.9-3.0and3.0-3.3mm inlength inthe fore-andhindwing, respectively. Yellow markings ofabdomenmore developed, athin longitudinal lineruns on the dorsalcarinafromtheanteriorborderof the 1sttotheendofthe7thsegment; 1stseg- mentwithbandattheventral2/3;2ndto3rdwithmedio-lateralband;4thto7thseg- mentswithawedge-shaped spotoneachbase; posterior partof4thwithvestigial one; 8thwith dimlypatch; 9-10thsegmententirely black. Valvular valvae semicircular, with the apex notchedand bilobed, with the apical partofeach loberounded.Cerci darkbrownand about2 timesas long as 10th, with pointed apex. Measurements (mm). — Abdomen(incl.app.)34.5-34.9,hindwing31.0-31.6inlength. DISTRIBUTION. - SouthernVietnam. 436 H.Karube DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS. — Twospecies ofthe genusHeliogomphus havebeen hithertorecordedfromVietnam,viz.H. scorpio andH. retroflexus(ASAHINA, 1996; TSUDA,2000). ThisnewspeciesissimilartoH.selysidescribedfromLeito,Burma,andalsorecorded fromAssam(FRASER, 1934)andThailand(ASAH1NA, 1981,1986;HÄMÄLÄINEN &P1NRATANA,1999).Itiseasily distinguished fromthelatterasfollows: (1) latero- ventralprojections atnearthemiddleofmalesuperiorappendages, (2) femalevalvular valvaearebroadwithroundedapex(valvular valvaeofH. selysislenderwithtriangu- larapex), (3) femalewithoutapairofpost-occipital spines, (4) femalewithapairof spinesbehindthelateralocellus.
