Preface Heart Transplantation: Theory and Practice is a translational and comprehensive reference which broadly covers a range of topics within Heart Transplantation including surgical procedure, requirements, potential complications, and follows up with the most up-to-date research and literature review. The book first lay out the anatomy, physiology, embryology, and pathology of the heart as an introduction, then goes into the details of cardiac transplantation including the surgical proce- dure, the potential complications, and cardio-immunology. It also delves into other aspects of heart transplantation including organ procurement, religious aspects, the ethical issues that can emerge prior or during the surgery, and artificial heart. Then it explores multi-organ transplantations including transplants that have been done in the specialized centers and their outcomes and complications. All these topics are discussed in a scientific medical language with illustrations and charts to aid understanding, allowing readers to gain a full understanding of the whole procedure easily. This book is—to our knowledge—the first book that vastly focuses on cardiosur- gical and medical aspects of heart transplantation, emerging from the significant need to fill a defect in the related cardiology and surgical resource map and incorporate meaningful updates regarding all aspects of the procedures. Many books were dedi- cated to the subject over the years, but those were rather superficial, immunological, or pathological. “Heart Transplantation Surgery: Theory and Practice” is composed of 12 chapters, containing concise and up-to-date information within about 200 pages. The book contains around 100 diagrams, tables, illustrations, and figures attempting to make it more interesting and easier to memorize by readers. More than 70 single-best-answer multiple choice questions (MCQs), distributed along the chapters, cover important aspects of heart transplantation surgery, from the basic sciences to ultimately surgery. Authors believe that heart transplantation has many aspects that should be more widely discussed, and through this proposed book the authors hope to stimulate further research and clinical trials for heart transplantation, as well as more discussion in the field especially related to the ethical and religious aspects. The book also vii viii Preface focuses on multi-organ transplantations including heart and artificial heart, and how this could be developed to solve the problem of lack of donors. At the end of each chapter, a list of MCQs related to the topics of that chapter and a list of references that readers can look up for additional information are provided. What makes our book novel is that the book looks at heart transplantation from all the aspects of medicine and surgery in addition to the ethical issues. It is written in simple medical language that makes it possible for various medical healthcare workers and students to build their knowledge base about the topic. It talks about these topics from the surgical perspective and covers the details of heart transplantation surgery in a step-by-step fashion. In this book, we are presenting new, unique, and sequenced surgical guidelines in heart transplantation surgery either in childhood or adulthood with pros and cons. Detailed ways with highly organized, attractive graphs and photos will make this book easily understandable for medical students, surgical residents, and surgeons alike. Finally, we have put more than 30 multiple-choice questions at the end of each chapter that cover all the topics and subjects discussed within that chapter. These could serve to boost the question banks for medical schools and residency programs.
