HILE 2012 will long be remembered
as the year of Britain’s greatest
Olympic successes, I fear that 2013
willgodownintheannalsastheyeartheNHS
begantoloseitscovetedtitleasthefinestfree
healthserviceintheworld.
Last week, Prime Minister David Cameron
andDeputyPrimeMinisterNickCleggpublished
theirauditofpromisesandperformanceafter30
monthsatthehelmofgovernment.
Back in 2010, this is what they said on
forming their coalition: “We want to increase
democratic participation in the NHS and
maketheNHSmoreaccountabletothepatients

tionandtheresourcesspentonadministration.”
Sohowdothesefinewordsmatchthedeeds?
Under their new set-up costing billions, we
will have a national commissioning board, a
health and social care information centre, the

regulator of foundation trust hospitals,
HealthwatchEngland,localHealthwatchboards
andhealthandwellbeingboards.
There will be 222 clinical commissioning
groupsofGPscoveringthecountry–andour
EnfieldCCGwillbebackedupbyanewnorth
andeastLondoncommissioningsupportunit.
HowMrandMrsJoeandJoanPublicwillfind
theirwayroundthisbureaucraticmaze,created
byagovernmentthatpromisedtherewouldbe
nomoretop-downreorganisationsoftheNHS,
remainstobeseen.
And this expensive set-up, which takes full
controloftheNHSinApril,isstilltoppedupby
theDepartmentofHealthinWhitehall.
Our local GPs have a tough road ahead,
implementingplanstheyhadlittle,ifany,sayin
devising.
Theyknowthereisanarmyofpatientsinthis
communitywillingtohelp,butwewillneedto
bemorevigilantthaneverifwearetokeepthe
goodnameoftheNHSaliveandwell.
