The Haifa Verification Con- ference is unique in bringing together research communities from formal and dynamic verificationofhardwareand softwaresystems.It thus encouragesboth the recognition of common core questions and a healthy exchange of ideas and methodsacrossdomains.TheattendeesatHVCcomefromacademia,industrial researchlabs, and industry, resulting in a broad range of perspectives. The program for this year was chosen from 23 submissions. While we faced anunexpected dropinsubmissions,the resultingprogramwasofahighquality. The paper by Anna Moss and Boris Gutkovich on “Functional Test Genera- tion with Distribution Constraints” was chosen for the Best Paper Award. David Harel Weizmann Instituteof Science Abstract. The talk shows the way techniques from computer science and software engineering can be applied beneficially to research in the lifesciences.Wewilldiscusstheideaofcomprehensiveandrealisticmod- eling of biological systems, where we try to understand and analyze an entiresystem in detail, utilizing in themodeling effort all thatis known about it. I will address the motivation for such modeling and the phi- losophy underlying the techniques for carrying it out, as well as the crucial ”verification” question of when such models are to be deemed valid, or complete. The examples I will present will be from among the biological modeling efforts my group has been involved in: T cell de- velopment in the thymus, lymph node behavior, organogenesis of the pancreas, fate determination in the reproductive system of C. elegans, and a generic cell model. The ultimate long-term ”grand challenge” is to produce an interactive, dynamic, computerized model of an entire multi-cellularorganism,suchastheC.elegansnematodeworm,whichis complex, but well-defined in terms of anatomy and genetics. The chal- lenge is to construct a full, true-to-all-known-facts, 4-dimensional, fully animated model of the development and behavior of this worm (or of a comparable multi-cellular animal), which is easily extendable as new biological facts are discovered. Today, many forces at play contribute to the gap between whatwecanfabricate(siliconcapacity)andwhatwehavetimetodesign. In addition, there are forces at play that contribute to a gap between whatwecandesignandwhatwerealistically havetimetoverify(within a project’s schedule). Nonetheless, we tape out complex systems all the time.Hence,thequestionarises, istheproductivitygapreal? Andif so, what can we do to minimize its effects? This talk provides a statistical analysisoftoday’sindustrytrendsintheadoptionofadvancedfunctional verification(AFV)techniques,andthenoffersnewmodelsforimproving AFV maturity within an organization.
