Read what our favorite critics*, our customers, say about the Grand Lake. . . “The Grand Lake Theatre is truly “grand!” One of the few great, classic movie palaces still remaining. Seeing a movie here is a special experience.” — Robert H., Piedmont “The Grand Lake is an architectural marvel that harkens to a time when cinema was meant to lift its audience to a place of beauty and enchantment. It is wonderful how well it is maintained and preserved. More than a movie, a trip to the Grand Lake is a total entertainment experience. Best wishes.” — Chris C., El Cerrito “Going to the movies at the Grand Lake leaves me feeling like I’ve really been somewhere — just like I did when I was a kid. The gracious surroundings and ambience contribute greatly to the moviegoing experience for me. I’m so glad it is here and refurbished for generations to come. Aloha Vintage Lovers! Have the winter blues got you down? It’s time for a tropical vacation. You don’t have to go too far for Island shopping. We have you covered at the Alameda Point Antiques Faire. All your Tiki dreams can come true without an airline ticket. Just shop for décor, barware, & retro fashions and you are there (with a coconut or two and a flower lei). The words “tiki culture” refer to the Polynesian style bars and tribal art that started to crop up in America in the mid 1930s. When American soldiers returned home after World War II, they brought back a major South Pacific influence along with them and helped to achieve a similar feeling in America. A number of Polynesian themed restaurants and tiki bars started opening up across the United States, which were based off of the ones in the South Pacific. The American tiki bars were kitschy fun (which I have no problem with!) and we have an award winning Tiki bar in Alameda called Forbidden Island. Don the Beachcomber (Don Beach) is generally credited as the first to open a specifically Tiki / Polynesian-themed restaurant and lounge in Hollywood, CA in 1934. Drink menu for Aku Aku, Las Vegas About three years later (Vic Bergeron) opened in Oakland, CA as Hinky Dinks with a similar theme but became Trader Vic’s due to trading in the recession. Both proprietors got popular concocting tasty cocktails not to mention the exotic décor, & a casual yet festive atmosphere. The theme called for bamboo and wicker decor, hand-carved Tikis, palms trees, & pretty girls in sarongs. Hawaiian music set the stage for the blossoming era. With Hawaiian statehood, Tiki in America became a sensation and folks could become suburban savages for the weekend. I have to say my favorite things about tiki are the retro, bright floral dresses/Hawaiian shirts, mugs carved into tiki gods, and of course, the tropical umbrella cocktails. In preparation for our upcoming spring Alameda Point Vintage Fashion Faire, where the theme for our costume contest is “Tiki Style”, I’ve been collecting vintage tiki-theme images and thought I’d share some with you. It will be held once more at The O’ Club and is Dancer Ida Marina in fierce Tiki fashion a two day indoor fashion extravaganza. 6 THE POINT Tropical Tiki drinks Pickin’ up on that “Tiki vibe” Friday night, March 22 from 6-9 PM will be our “Tiki Style” Party, with live Hawaiian music and tropical libations from our neighbors St. Georges Spirits. Top dealers will be offering vintage styles from every decade. Our costume contest is at 8PM in the main Ballroom & the Grand Prize is a $100 voucher to shop the show. (See our AD on Page 2) If you love the Island Lifestyle, Tiki, Hawaiiana, or Polynesian Pop Culture, Alameda Point is the place to shop. Scolari’s focus on the tasty rather than the territory and the delectable over the dramatic, enables their kitchen to bring a diverse array of cuisines to your tables without the extended pinky finger. Local Alameda business proprietor, Dan Nichols, owner of The Lucky 13 Bar, opened Scolari’s with Culinarian and Executive Chef Mike Boyd in 2010. Since it’s opening Scolari’s has developed a loyal and local following that routinely earns 5-star reviews on Yelp. Scolari’s is conveniently located adjacent to the Lucky 13 Bar, where patrons can order their food then head next door for a beer and Scolari’s will deliver your delicious burger right to you. In 2011, Scolari’s was chosen as “Best New Restaurant (open less than a year)” by the readers of Alameda Magazine for Alameda’s “Best of 2011”. Then, in 2012, Alameda Magazine’s “Best of 2012” named Scolari’s Good Eats with the “Best Burger”, “Best Non-Burger Burger”, “Best Twist on French Fries”, and “Best Late-Night Munchies”. Regular specials include not only burgers and fries, but fresh Stromboli, Taylor Ham with fried egg and cheese on brioche, fresh mozzarella salad with red onion, arugula dressed with basil puree and balsamic vinegar, as well as fresh roasted pork shoulder with parmesan and kale. Scolari’s also regularly makes their own house bread, has daily pizza specials by the slice, and additional vegan options. In 2012, the extension of the restaurant arrived in the form of a vintage 1964 AirStream camper trailer that was converted to a food truck. In August, the AirStream started offering lunch at a Harbor Bay Parkway site and received much enthusiasm from the local businesses as well as locals just walking by. The Scolari’s AirStream offers the same delicious food from the restaurant on a regular basis, as well as seasonal specials and super specials not offered at the restaurant. It is also available for all types of catering events. In January 2013, the Scolari’s AirStream it made its 1st appearance at the Alameda Point Antiques Faire. Mike Boyd’s goal is to “Satisfy and fortify the antique shopper with hot and delicious breakfast food (for the early shopper) or hearty and fulfilling lunches for those persevering throughout the afternoon in search of the perfect treasure”. Scolari’s Good Eats restaurant is located at 1303 Park Street at Encinal in downtown Alameda. Daily menus are posted on Facebook, or call 510- 521-2400.
