It is spoken in the far northwesternpartoftheIberianPeninsula.Asaresultofhistoricalcircumstances,Spanish hasexerteda strongpolitical andcultural influenceoverthis region sincethe endofthe MiddleAges, andthereisinconsequenceinGaliciatodayasociallyascendantSpanish- speakingurbanminority,whiletherestofthepopulationmaintainsGalicianasitsmother tongue.Asaresult,Galicianisinasituationoflanguageshiftandthespokenlanguagenow includes numerous loan-words from Spanish. However, in recent decades Galician has beenrecognizedasanofficiallanguageinGaliciaalongwithSpanish,andthelanguagehas gonethroughaprocessofstandardizationandsocialrecovery. ThelanguagevarietydescribedhereisthatofcolloquialGalicianasspokenbyamiddle- agedmalespeakerwhosespeechmaybeconsideredrepresentativeofaninformalvariety usedbyeducatedurbanspeakers. Consonants IllustrationsoftheIPA 83 knownasseseo(FernandezRei 1991: 189-215).Anotherdialectalcharacteristicwhichis encounteredchieflyinthewesternhalfoftheGalician-speakingregionisknownasgheada; this dialectal featureconsists ofthe absence ofthe voiceless velarplosive /g/, which is replacedbyavoicelessfricativewithseveralpossiblerealizations,includingpharyngeal[h], uvular ft], velar [x] and glottal [h]. Fricatives /0/and/§/may becomepartially orfully voicedin syllable-final position before a voiced consonant: dezmeses ['deg 'me§es]~ TdeO 'meses,] 'ten months', trts meses [tre? meses] 'threemonths'. Elsewhere theyremain voiceless. The open central vowel/a/isrealizedasanopenback[a]incontactwithvelarconsonants.
