MaJor tcxls for understanding the 1raditional system of rhetoric include wrilings by Aristotle, Cicero, mid Quintilian. but oflen the textbooks of the schools were practical manuals that laid out how to write a speech, a letter, or a poem Many have survived in Greek, Latin, and early modem languages and are impo11ant sources for a full understanding of the tradition. Collections of some of them were published as early as the Aldine Rhelores Ciraeci of I 508, and dictionaries of tropes and figures appeared in the early modem period: the best known are Emesti's J,exica Technologica of 1795-1797. The first attempt, however, at a comprehensive survey of the sources was published by Richard Volkmann in 1874 under the title J)fe Rhelorik der (iriechen und Romer in sys/emalischer Ohersich1. A revised and enlarged edition appeared in 1885 and was later reprinted as pan of Mueller's Handhuch der Allerlumswissenscha/i. In 1974 Josef Manin 's Anlike Rhelorik was substituted for Volkmann's treat111ent in the Handhuch (vol. 2, part 3 ), but it has not proved entirely satisfactory. Fortunately, Heinrich Lausberg had in 1960 published the first edition of his fine Handhuch der lilerarischen Rhelorik, in which, as he explained in the Foreword, classical rhetoric is viewed as phenomena which present themselves throughout the course of European literature.
