ThisSpringerimprintispublishedbytheregisteredcompanySpringerNatureSwitzerlandAG Theregisteredcompanyaddressis:Gewerbestrasse11,6330Cham,Switzerland Preface Human dignity can lay claim to a long tradition as a religious and philosophical concept,butonlyinrecenttimeshasittakenshapeasalegalconcept.Thearrivalof dignitasininternationallawwasincitedbytheatrocitiesoftheSecondWorldWar.It wasinresponsetothesethattheUnitedNations,in1948,proclaimedtheUniversal DeclarationofHumanRights,whichstatesinitsfirstArticlethat“allhumanbeings arebornfreeandequalindignityandrights”.In1949,theconceptwasanchoredon thenationallevelforthefirsttimeinArticle1Section1oftheGermanBasicLaw and, as that examplewas followed, graduallygained prevalence inother European countries. Muchhasalreadybeenwrittenabouthumandignity,butwhathasbeenmissing untilnowisasystematicworkwhichsetsouttoanalysethisconceptinthelawofthe individualcountriesofEurope.Thepresentvolumeattemptstofillthisgapbytaking a detailed look at each country’s constitution, legislation and jurisprudence. In addition, it also examines the significance of human dignity in the law of the European Union and in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The chapters are preceded by an extensive introduction which brings to the fore the essentialaspectsofhumandignity. We are grateful to all those who played a part in the realization of this volume.
