Printed on acid-free paper Springer is part of Springer Science+Business Media (www.springer.com) To my wife Natasha, and kids Tanishq, Vedha and Kush, who give me the strength and love to pursue my dreams Preface The fi eld of endovascular treatment—be it in cardiology, interven- tional radiology, or vascular surgery—is a dynamic one. However, in this rapidly evolving fi eld, the fundamentals remain the same. We are still taught to ensure that catheters are introduced over a wire, still taught never to lose control of the wire, etc. So while we are always looking for the next great tool on the horizon, one cannot use these new tools, without a sound understanding of the basics of endovascu- lar treatment. The purpose of this text is to provide basic principles and techniques of commonly performed endovascular interventions. We have endeav- ored not just to present one opinion, but by choosing a global fi eld of authors, to re fl ect the everyday practice of the “world.” There are other more comprehensive texts that delve into the details of any one proce- dure; however, this is the fi rst text of its kind to be available to all practitioners of endovascular therapy, be they residents, fellows, or staff as well as nonmedical staff in the cath lab/interventional radiology suite/hybrid OR. Designed to be used as a day-to-day reference for any queries of “how to, when, and what ifs.” To ensure that it is truly re fl ective of the questions we all sometimes have when thinking of the method to pursue, the chapters have been written by having a resident/ fellow coauthor the chapter with a senior faculty member. This has been the de fi ning principle for the book, from conception to comple- tion—learning the technique from mentors, be it related to procedures or to authoring chapters or even the book.
