Bookssuch as the CorrosionDataSurvey,6thEdition,NACE(1985) are an excellentcomplementto this handbook. Thereaderiscautionedthatcorrosionisindeedacomplexsubjectandthatsimplylookingupthemajorchemical componentinasystemmaynotbesufficienttoentirely define thealloys thataresuitablefor application.Infact, itisfarmore commonthatrelativelysmallconcentrationsofother chemicalconstituentsmay beamore control lingfactor intheselectionofmaterialsthanthemajorcomponent. Thus, itisincumbentonthereadertoconsider allthechemicalspeciesexpectedintheenvironment, aswellastheeffectsoftemperature, pressure, flowrate, etc. oncorrosion. AgoodresourceistheMetalsHandbook,Volume13,publishedbyASMInternational,whichalso includeskeyreferencesonspecificalloysandenvironments. TheHandbookofCorrosionDataisintendedtoprovideastartingpointfromwhichmore detailedanalysisofthe literaturemaybeinitiatedtodullyevaluatetheperformanceofmetalsincorrosiveenvironments.Abookthatpre sentsprimarilytables andgraphscannotinclude alloftheimportantsupportdataavailableintheoriginalpaper. Therefore, theoriginalpapersmustbeconsultedforimportantparametersthataffectcorrosion, suchastestdura tion, solutioncomposition, temperature, stresslevel, heattreatment, etc.Finalselectionofmetalsforaspecificen vironment should be based on more detailed literature surveys and/or testing in the actual or a simulated environment. Thepurposeofthisbookistoprovidethose involved with the corrosionofmetals andalloys astartingpointto quicklyandeasilyassesstherecentliteratureonmetalsincorrosiveenvironments.Thishandbookisnotintended toprovideallofthedataavailableintheliteratureoneveryenvironmentthatexists.Forcertainenvironments(i.e. sulfuricacid), asignificantamountofworkhasbeenperformedoverthe years, suchthatspecificdata orgraphs have beenadoptedasclassicreferencematerialonthesubject. Theseclassicpieceshavebeenincludedtoaidthe readerin"cominguptospeed"onaspecificenvironment. Finally, thisbookisacomplementtothecorrosiondatabasefromASMInternational.Whilethehandbookcontains somegraphicalmaterialnotincludedinthedatabase, allofthetabulardataareidentical.Thedatabasecompilation was atimeconsuming,tediousprocessforwhichIthankmyco-editor,DavidAnderson.
