Research in pediatric psychopharmacology has greatly expanded in recent years. This handbook includes the latest research findings with special attention to the clinical context in which care is delivered and treatment decisions are made. To this end, the material has been arranged and presented by disorder rather than by type of med- ication. Psychopathology is, in fact, the target of treatment and a care- ful diagnostic evaluation is the foundation of any rational therapy. Few treatments in medicine can raise more controversy than the use of medications to mange emotional and behavioral disturbances in childhood. Safety concerns should certainly be paramount when con- sidering exposing children to pharmacological agents, and, whenever possible, the possibility of using alternative, psychosocial interventions should be weighed before choosing medications. It remains however that, for many children, a cautions, scientifically informed, and care- fully monitored pharmacotherapy can produce major improvements. In this spirit, the handbook is meant to be a contribution towards prac- ticing evidence-based pediatric psychopharmacology. Benedetto Vitiello, Gabriele Masi, Donatella Marazziti
