Foreword It gives me much pleasure to add a fewlines to Mildred Carter's fasci- nating book on reflexology. My attention to this field and its thera- peutic value was drawn by my learned friend Aslam Effendi, who, among otherthings, is astudentofthe Carterschool and has been giv- ing convincing demonstrations ofthe techniques outlined in this book for laymen. For example, abnormal conditions in the body show up in the hands and feet; and no such reflexes are found in healthy people. Manycenturies back, the Chinese physicians discovered acupunc- ture, and something similar was practiced in the Indo-Pakistan sub- continent. But it was only in the beginning ofthis century that some medical pioneers in the West improved on the techniques of the ancient oriental physicians by developing Reflexology (orwestern-type acupressure). And today, Reflexology can certainly prove an effective weapon in the hands of physiotherapists and the medical profession generally. Perhaps it was the pioneering work of Reflexologists that inspired Elizabeth Kenny to develop her technique to combat poliomyelitis, and thus gain world recognition despite bitter opposi- tion from the medical profession. As a physician and scientist, I have learned one very important — lesson and thatis to be always a humble and curious student. There- fore, Mildred Carter andpioneers like herwho are trying in theirown humble way to unveil some ofthe vast mysteries ofthe healing art, deserve our respectful attention. Z. Hussain, M.B., B.S.
