Introduction [ ThesecondvariationoperatorofminimalsubmanifoldsofRiemannianmanifolds (the Jacobi operator) carries the information about the stability properties of the 1 submanifoldwhenitis thoughtasa criticalpointfor the volume functional. When v 3 theambientRiemannianmanifoldisthecomplexprojectivespaceCPn,Lawsonand 5 Simons [LS] characterized the complex submanifolds as the unique stable minimal 4 submanifolds of CPn. In particular, minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of CPn are 1 unstable. In [O1] Oh introduced the notion of Hamiltonian stability for minimal 0 Lagrangian submanifolds of CPn (or more generally of any K¨ahler manifold), as 5 0 thoseonessuchthatthesecondvariationofvolumeisnonnegativeforHamiltonian / deformationsofCPn. HeprovedthattheCliffordtorusinCPnisHamiltonianstable h andconjecturedthatitis alsovolumeminimizing under Hamiltoniandeformations t a ofCPn. B. Kleiner had provedthat the totally geodesic Lagrangianrealprojective m space RPn in CPn is volume minimizing under Hamiltonian deformations. v: In [U] Urbano (see also [H] Theorem B) characterized the Clifford torus as the i uniqueHamiltonianstableminimalLagrangiantorusinCP2 andgotalowerbound X for the index (the number of negative eigenvalues of the Jacobi operator) of the r minimal Lagrangiancompact orientable surfaces in CP2, proving that the index is a at least 2 and it is 2 only for the Clifford torus. In this paper the author continues studying these problems, proving, among others, the following results: The Clifford torus is the unique Hamiltonian stable minimal La- grangian compact orientable surface of CP2 with genus g 4. ≤ The totally geodesic real projective plane RP2 is the unique Hamil- tonian stable minimal Lagrangian compact nonorientable surface of CP2 with Euler characteristic χ 1. ≥− Date:January11,2005. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. To prove these results we need to have a control of the index of the minimal La- grangian Klein bottles of CP2 which admit a one-parameter group of isometries. Following the ideas of [CU], in section 5 we describe explicitly those minimal sur- faces and estimate their index. The author would like to thank A. Ros for his valuable comments about the paper. 2. Preliminaries Let CP2 be the complexprojective plane with its canonicalFubini-Study metric , of constant holomorphic sectional curvature 4. Among them, we would like to bring out the Clifford torus 1 T = [z] CP2 z 2 = ,i=1,2,3 , i { ∈ || | 3 } and the totally geodesic Lagrangian real projective plane RP2 = [z] CP2 z =z¯,i=1,2,3 , i i { ∈ | } whose 2 : 1 oriented covering provides the totally geodesic Lagrangian immersion S2 CP2 of the unit sphere. Proof of the results Theorem 3.1. Let Φ : Σ CP2 be a Hamiltonian stable minimal Lagrangian → immersion of a compact orientable surface of genus g. Soin this case 2<[g+1], whichis a contradictionwheng =2,3,4. If g =0, ≥ 2 our surface is the totally geodesic Lagrangian two-sphere, which is Hamiltonian unstable. As our surface is either a Klein bottle or a projective plane with a handle, we havethat g =1or2 and thatthe equality (in the aboveinequality) is not attained, i.e. 3µ<1+g. This is a contradiction and the proof is finished. q.e.d. Remark 3.5. In this nonorientable case, we cannot use that the maximum multi- plicity µ of Φ satisfies µ 2 when the Euler characteristic χ(Σ) 0. The author ≥ ≤ only knows that Φ is not an embedding when Σ is a Klein bottle, i.e. χ(Σ) = 0. (See [M], Theorem 2). HAMILTONIAN STABILITY AND INDEX 7 Corollary 3.6. Let Φ:Σ CP2 be minimal Lagrangian immersion of a compact → nonorientable surface Σ. Then Ind(Σ) 3 and the equality holds if and only if Φ is an embedding and Φ(Σ) is RP2. ≥ Proof: If Σ is a projective plane, then as we mentioned in section 2, Φ is an embedding and Φ(Σ) is RP2, whose index is 3. If Σ isa compactnonorientablesurfacewith Eulercharacteristicχ(Σ) 0,then ≤ β (Σ) = 1 χ(Σ). So, from (2.2) Ind(Σ) β (Σ) 4 when χ(Σ) 3. Area minimizing surfaces in their Hamiltonian isotopy classes. A Lagrangian immersion Φ : Σ CP2 is called Hamiltonian minimal [O2] if → it is a critical point of the area functional for Hamiltonian deformations. The corresponding Euler-Lagrangeequation says that Σ is Hamiltonian minimal if and only if divJH =0, where H is the mean curvature vector of Σ and div stands for the divergence operator on Σ. SupposenowthatΦ:Σ CP2isaminimalLagrangianimmersionofacompact surface Σ and that in its H→amiltonian isotopy class there exists a minimizer Σ˜ for the area. Then, inparticular,Σ˜ is a Hamiltonian minimal Lagrangiansurface, and so divJH˜ = 0, being H˜ the mean curvature vector of Σ˜. But, using Theorem I in [O3], the deRham cohomology class defined by the mean curvature vector α(v) = ω(v,H˜) is invariant under Hamiltonian isotopies. As Σ is minimal, this class must vanish, and hence there exists a smooth function f : Σ˜ R such that f = JH˜. Now, divJH˜ = 0 implies that f is a harmonic functi→on and so it is ∇constant, which means that Σ˜ is also minimal. Moreover,as Σ˜ is also Hamiltonian stable, our previous results say that: The Clifford torus of CP2 is the unique area minimizing surface in its Hamiltonian isotopy class, provided that someone existed. There exists no area minimizing surfaces in the Hamiltonian iso- topy class of a minimal Lagrangian compact orientable surface of CP2 of genus 2,3 or 4. There exists no area minimizing surfaces in the Hamiltonian iso- topy class of a minimal Lagrangian Klein bottle or a minimal La- grangian projective plane with a handle of CP2. 5. Minimal Lagrangian Klein bottles of CP2 admitting a one-parameter group of isometries. In this section we are going to describe the minimal LagrangianKleinbottles of CP2 admitting a one-parameter group of isometries, estimating also their Hamil- tonianindex. To understand it, we need to give a shortintroduction to the elliptic Jacobi functions.
