INTRODUCTION The papers of a Missouri Republican lawyer, politician, educator, and author include correspondence, letterbooks, scrapbooks, manuscripts, photographs, cartoons, and miscellaneous material. Originals in storage. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by an unknown person in September 1943 (Accession No. 43), Henrietta H. Lammert on 20 January 1973 (Accession No. 232), and the Kansas State Historical Society on 5 May 1980 (Accession No. 4280). Additional material was deposited on contract by Agnes L. Haskell on 1 May 1945 (Accession No. 232) and transferred from the State Historical Society of Missouri on 10 June 1982 (Accession No. 4438). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Herbert Spencer Hadley was born in Olathe, Kansas, on February 20, 1872, the son of Major John Milton Hadley and Harriet Beach Jones Hadley. He earned an A.B. at the University of Kansas in 1892, received an LL.B. with first honors from Northwestern University in 1894, and received LL.D’s from Northwestern in 1909, the University of Missouri in 1910, Missouri Valley College in 1911, and Harvard in 1925. He married Agnes Lee on October 8, 1901. They had three children: John Milton, Henrietta, and Herbert Spencer. Hadley was in general practice in Kansas City, 1894-1898; first assistant city counselor in charge of trial work for Kansas City, 1898-1901; and prosecuting attorney of Jackson County, 1901-1903. He became widely known for his successful prosecution of legal offenders. As attorney general of Missouri from 1905 to 1909, Hadley successfully prosecuted cases against the Standard Oil Company, railroads, the Harvester trust, insurance and lumber trusts, and the race track gamblers of St. Louis. After serving as governor of Missouri from 1909 to 1913, Hadley resumed practice in Kansas City as special counsel for railways west of Chicago in the federal valuation of railways project, 1913-1914. Hadley moved to Colorado for his health and was professor of law at the University of Colorado, 1917-1923. He returned to Missouri to become chancellor of Washington University in 1923, a position he held until his death on December 1, 1927. He was the author of many articles and Rome and the World Today.
