I have known Jean-Noel since he arrived in San Francisco in 1980 to study advanced digital imaging in my laboratory. Quick to recog- nize the potential of digital imaging in the understanding of abdominal and gynecologic disease, he was able to publish a number of original papers based upon his work in San Francisco. Returning to France he rapidly rose to the rank of Full Professor at the oldest and most famous hospital in Paris – The Hotel Dieu Hospital where much of the incredible material, found in G ynecologic Imaging was amassed. G ynecologic Imaging is the tri- umph of Dr. Buy’s career and deserves to become a classic text which correlates gynecologic science with the modern imaging techniques of Computed Tomography, Ultrasonography, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Jean-Noel Buy is eminently qualifi ed to write this authoritative text. His career has been spent at a hospital with a special focus on gynecologic disease. The scope and depth of material available has enabled a truly unique and comprehensive text to be written. Approximately 1,000 pages in length the book is organized into 10 parts and 37 chapters. Multiple color drawings, tables, charts as well as macroscopic and microscopic fi nd- ings are closely correlated with over 4,000 superb digital images. Readers will fi nd the clarity and cohesiveness of a book, written almost exclusively by one author, refreshing. The radiologist, gynecologist, surgeon, medi- cal student and all clinicians involved in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic disease will acquire a greater ability to understand, interpret and integrate the imaging fi ndings in gynecologic disease and how to best use this knowledge in daily clinical practice. Jean-Noel presented his idea to write a defi nitive text on gynecologic disease to me several years ago. I have enjoyed watching and at times discussing with Jean-Noel the book’s progress. While it has taken time to com- plete, the wait has been worth it. I believe Gynecologic Imaging will rapidly fi nd a place in the library of all who are or will be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of the wide spectrum of gynecologic abnormalities. Seattle, Washington Albert A. Moss, MD, FACR Professor of Radiology Chairman Emeritus University of Washington School of Medicine ix Acknowledgments My heartfelt thanks and gratitude to: 1. Professor J. Ecoiffier and Professor D. Vadrot who allowed me to become a Professor of Radiology. 2. Professor Albert A. Moss (Full Professor in University of California in San Francisco) and later Chairman (in University of Washington in Seattle) who played an important role in my knowledge and capabilities which have enriched me, and played an essential role in my formation. Professor A. Margulis (Chairman in the University of San Francisco) who graciously accepted me for a visiting fellowship and who instructed me in UCSF. 3. Thanks to the gynecologists, surgeons and pathologists who enabled me to advance in the knowledge and way to deal with patients and to establish correlations between radiology and clinical, surgical and patho- logical findings. Thanks to Professor Pujade Eric, oncologist who created the Gineco group, where the most uncommon cases particularly of adnexal masses were discussed. Heartfelt thanks to Missis Ute Heilmann who accepted realization of this project, Claus-Dieter Bachem who showed deep concern in guiding me in the edition and giving me precious advices, Alwin Metter in the realization of pictures and drawings, Karthikeyan for all his appropriate questions for the revisions and Meike Stoeck for the numerous advantages in directing me.
