Eventhoughadhocnetworkshaveemergedtobeattractive andtheyhold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed.Someofthewell-knownchallengesareattributedtoissuesrelating toscalability,quality-of-service,energyefficiencyandsecurity. Thishandbookattemptstoprovideacomprehensiveguideonfundamental concepts, newideasandresultsintheareasofmobileadhocandotheradhoc networkingsystems.Thisbookhasbeenpreparedkeepinginmindthatitneeds to prove itself to be a valuable resource dealing with both the important core and the specialized issues in this area. We have attempted to offer a wide coverage of topics. We hope that it will be a valuable reference for students, instructors, researchers and industry practitioners. We believe this is particu- larly an attractive feature of this book, as the very limited selection of books availableonadhocnetworksweareawareofarewrittenprimarilyforacade- micians/researchers.Wehaveattemptedtomakethisbookusefulforboththe academiciansandthepractitionersalike. Organization and Features Altogetherthereare21chaptersinthebook.Chapter1discussessome ofthe propertiesofgeneralmultihopnetworksintheoryandinpractice.Theauthors vii viii Preface discusssomeoftheimportantissuesrelatingtosimulation,testbedandtheore- ticalstudiesinthesetypesofnetworks.Chapters2and3discusssomeofthe characteristicfeaturesofadhocnetworksthatmakethemdistinctfromother typesofnetworksandwhy/howthe issueofcooperationplaysanimportant roleintheirsuccessfulfunctioning.Chapters4–8relatetotheimportantissue of routing (including multicasting and broadcasting) in ad hoc networks. A chapter on formal verification of routing protocols, Chapter 8, written by Caˆmara et al., will definitely be a chapter of particular attraction to many readers.Chapters9–11dealwithmobilityissuesinthesenetworks.Chapters 12 and 13 discuss the quality of service issues, which have beenlong consid- ered to be challenging in this type of network. In particular, Chapter 13, discussing about delay management is a topic of great interest currently amongstresearchersandpractitionersalike.Chapter14discussestheaddress allocationmechanismsinadhocnetworksandChapter15discusscongestion control. Chapters 16–19 are dedicated to security and trust issues in ad hoc networks, which again, have drawn considerable concern amongst research- ers. Chapters 20 and 21 discuss some trendier issues – vehicular ad hoc net- works and the integration of mobile ad hoc networks into IP-based access networks. Welistbelowsomeoftheimportantfeaturesofthisbook, which, webelieve, wouldmakethisbookavaluableresourceforourreaders: (cid:2) Mostofthechaptersofthebookareauthoredbyprominentacademicians/ researchers/practitionersinwirelessadhocnetworks,whohavebeenwork- ing with these topics for several years and are supposed to have thorough understandingoftheconcepts. Preface ix (cid:2) Most of the chapters also provide a set of questions at the end, which can helpinassessingtheunderstandingofthereaders. (cid:2) In order to make the book useful for pedagogical purposes, almost all chapters of the book also have a corresponding set of presentation slides. The slides can be obtained as a supplementary resource by contacting the publisher,Springer. Wehavemadeattempts, inallpossiblewaywecould, tomakethedifferent chapters of the book look as much coherent and synchronized as possible. However, it cannot be denied that, as the chapters were written by different authors, itwasnotpossibletofullyachievethisgoal.Webelievethatthisisa limitationofmosteditedbooksofthissort. Target Audience The book is written by primarily targeting the student community. This includes the students of all levels – those getting introduced to these areas, thosehavinganintermediatelevelofknowledgeofthetopicsandthosewhoare alreadyknowledgeableaboutmanyofthetopics.Inordertokeepupwiththis goal, wehaveattemptedtodesigntheoverallstructureandcontentofthebook insuchamannerthatmakesitusefulatalllearninglevels.Toaidinthelearning process, almost all chapters have a set of questions at the end of the chapter. Also, inorderthatteacherscanusethisbookforclassroomteaching, thebook alsocomeswithpresentationslidesandsamplesolutionstoexercisequestions, whichareavailableassupplementaryresources. The secondary audience for this book is the research community, whether theyareworkingintheacademiaorintheindustry.Tomeetthespecificneeds tothisaudiencegroup, mostchaptersofthebookalsohaveasectioninwhich attemptshavebeenmadetoprovidedirectionsforfutureresearch. Finally, we have also taken into consideration the needs to those readers, typically from the industries, who have the quest for getting insight into the practicalsignificanceofthetopics,i.e.,howthespectrumofknowledgeandthe ideasarerelevantforreal-lifeworkingofwirelessadhocnetworks.
