Unidirectionally Stiffened Double Hulls (USDH) have surfaced as the most promising structural designs due to theirproducibility. This paperexamines the ability of USDH to withstand grounding damage. The extent ofhull penetration has been calculated and related to the ship's gross characteristics, hull structure geometry, and the geometry of the obstruction. The extent ofhull penetration and lifting forvarying reefheights and USDH spreading angles for a tanker is given as an example.
