Organized by Professor Lucas F.Mateo-Seco(†2014),theColloquiumbroughttogetheranumberof schol- arstodelveintotheContraEunomiumI.Thepracticeof devotingeachcollo- quium to particular works of Gregory of Nyssa was already well established. Afterthetwofirstcolloquiawhichaddressedgeneralissues—Écritureetcul- turephilosophiquedanslapenséedeGrégoiredeNysse(Chevetogne,1969)and Gregor von Nyssa und die Philosophie (Münster, 1972)—, the following three focusedonselectedwritings:Deinfantibuspraematureabreptis(Leiden,1974), The Easter Sermons (Cambridge, 1978) and The Biographical Works (Mainz, 1982).TheColloquiumheldinPamplonawasthefirstcenteredononeofGre- gory’s dogmatic works. It filled a bibliographical gap and, at the same time, broughtaboutasignificantadvanceinthestudyofGregory’sthought,precisely throughitsanalysisofhismostimportantpolemicalwork.AtthisColloquium thefirstgenerationofexpertsonGregoryofNyssasetdownasolidpathupon whichtheupcominggenerationswouldcontinue:in2004,the10thColloquium inOlomoucinquiredintotheContraEunomiumIIand,laterin2010,the12th ColloquiuminLeuvendiscussedtheContraEunomiumIII. The proceedings from these three colloquia on the ContraEunomium fol- lowedasimilarstructure:anEnglishtranslationofNyssa’stextbyProfessorStu- artG.Hallwasincludedalongwithnumerousstudiescoveringawidearrange of topicsfromdiverseperspectives.Forthisreason,inadditiontowhateach individualvolumecontributestotheresearchinGregoryofNyssaasawhole, the three volumes are of considerable scholarly significance, given that they provideanunabridgedandunifiedtranslationoftheentireContraEunomium accompaniedbyaselectionofcommentariesandstudies.Thesignificanceof theseproceedingsisdoubtlessoneofthemainreasonsforpreparinganewedi- tionoftheContraEunomiumI(Eunsa,1988)nowpublishedbyBrillaspartof theSeries“SupplementstoVigiliaeChristianae,”whichalsoincludestheContra EunomiumII(VCS82,Brill2007)andIII(VCS124,Brill2014). Thisvolumehasatwofoldintention:First,itattemptstorendertheessential partsoftheoriginalvolumeofContraEunomiumImoreaccessibletointerna- tionalreaders.Tothisend,itincorporatesboththeEnglishtranslationofCon- traEunomiumIandaselectionofthearticlespublishedinthefirsteditionthat arestillrelevanttodayforthestudyofGregoryofNyssa.Indoingso,thisedition givesanacknowledgementinmemoriamofarenownedgenerationofGregory of Nyssascholars,suchasProfessorsL.F.Mateo-Seco,G.C.Stead,P.M.Grego-
