The hospitality of the Greek people is so warm that you're guaranteed to be welcomed with open arms and quite often with a massive feast filled with sensational food and lively festivities. While I tend to return to some of my favourite spots each year I also go and explore different islands and areas of the mainland and feel that the options for travelling through Greece are endless. While it may sound clichéd I truly believe that Greece is a destination that will not just please, but excite every type of traveller. It offers beautiful waterways with the ability to swim, snorkel or just relax and history and monuments with amazing stories that are best experienced first hand with a local guide. At Greece Med Travel we can assist you no matter your budget or time schedule and hope that Greece becomes your second home in years to come. You may face unexpected changes, delays or even an additional cost if you are not prepared. Please read the information below as we highlight important facts and answers to common questions. Hotels in Greece Greece Hotel Stayover Tax Booking a hotel in Greece is the easy part. It is the finding and choosing prior to the booking that can take hours, even days of researching. Talk to our team and we will recommend a hotel that meets your budget and expectations. We have a wide range of hotels for you to choose from, but have selected for the brochure only a few in each category due to space limitations. Should you wish to book a hotel that is not listed in the brochure please do not hesitate to contact us, as we are able to book hundreds of hotels throughout Greece. Categories There is no official star rating classification in Greece. Greek National Tourist Organization classifies hotels into six categories: "L" (deluxe), A","B", "C","D","E". In general as hotels vary significantly in quality, size, facilities and style, classification is based on room sizes, number of restaurants or other facilities for example parking. A-class hotels are usually shown as 4 star, B as 3 or 4 star, C as 3 and D as 2 but this is not a rule. The higher category does not always guarantee that the hotel is better. It is common to find a 4 star hotel which can be considered as 2 or 3 star only by Australians. Similar category hotels very greatly between destinations especially on the islands. Prices Whether you are looking for a great deal, a great location or a traditional house, we have made the hotel selection process easier for you. Avoid being swayed by the belief that highly priced hotels are the more luxurious ones or that the special deals online have to be booked instantly. This isn't always the case. Moreover, budget prices can sometimes come with surprises or nasty additional costs attached that you were not expecting. Take transport into consideration. The hotel might be a bargain but the transport into the city or to the tourist sites might be prohibitive. Locations The hoteliers, as well as many online booking engines, use loose terms to describe hotel locations. Words commonly used are: access to transport, close to attractions or town, near the beach etc. It is important that some attractions may be suitable for some and not for the others. Close to town may mean next to the nightclubs and near the beach may be a holiday resort in remote location. Clients can get a surprise on arrival when they realise that that the only way to access the idyllic hotel is by donkey trail or that they have to take a taxi each time they want to have dinner in a restaurant other than the one at the hotel. Descriptions about hotel locations are commonly vague, and as there are usually no street names or signs on the islands, it is almost impossible to locate the exact location or real walking distance on a map. Distances described on the website are often inaccurate. Greek Ferries The ferry system which connects various Greek islands is generally complicated with itineraries constantly changing or non-existing. Ferries are usually privately owned by various companies. There is no one centralised system which displays schedules and prices for all. Although there have been improvements over the past few years, ferry timetables and scheduled changes are common and take place even at the last minute. If you book them yourself, you may find only when you arrive at port that your ferry has been cancelled. Ferry tickets are paper printed tickets, not yet electronic so you may have to waste time to find a place to collect them if booked online. Some routes tend to fill up very quickly and tickets may be sold out in advance. Some islands may only offer one connection per day or two or three times per week. For this reason inside knowledge and a local representative that can make last minute changes is of the utmost importance. There are two main types of ferries operating in Greece: • Ferries are the largest and slowest vessels. Basic conventional ferries are the cheapest option. Some may have deck space in open air or semi enclosed decks. Most of them offer economy seats, airplane type seats and some may have two to four bedded cabins for night trips. They usually have indoor bars and food outlets. • Fast Ferries are high speed ferries usually modern, quick and more comfortable. They vary in size from large vessels similar to cruise boats, to a smaller vessels such as high-speed catamarans, flying dolphins or Hydrofoils, which usually take only a few hundred passengers. Fast ferries may offer aircraft type seats, Business and VIP category seats, which vary in size and location on the vessel. The Business and VIP area offers larger seats, tables and better facilities. Transfers in Greece We recommend to pre-book all transfers. In Greece a regular taxi can be of any size, make, model or year and is allowed to take other passengers along the way, charging each party a separate fare. The drivers do not often speak English, are not always familiar with hotels and are not required to carry maps. Share taxi system means that taxi drivers asks passengers where they wish to travel to before letting them in and can refuse a fare if the ride is too short or not convenient for them. All our transfers in Athens are private air conditioned Mercedes Benz E200/E300 with uniformed driver. You will be whisked off to your hotel, instead of having to stand in long taxi queues. As each car can take only three passengers, we also offer transfers by a Mercedes Vito minivan for four to seven passengers. Public transport particular on the islands is very limited with buses usually only operating between main towns and some popular beaches. Most travellers are not aware that finding a taxi on some islands can be as difficult as winning the lotto! There may be just one taxi on an island even though there are thousands of people there. For example Kastelorizo & Folegandros have one taxi only and Mykonos has 31. There is no street names or signs on most of the islands. Most places it is not possible to hail a taxi from the street. Most hotels in Santorini which are located on the cliff do not have road access, which means car transportation can only be provided to the end of the main road. There are only 39 licenced taxis on the island. However, if you book transfers with us the vehicle will be waiting for you and we will communicate with hotel so the porter can assist with luggage. On most islands we offer possibility for private or share transfer.
