The purpose ofwriting this history is to preserve what is known about the beginnings ofthe-Brunswick Baptist Association. This will help us become more familiar with our heritage and to better appreciate what our forefathersdidto contributetothe spiritual welfare ofour lives. Knowingoftheirfaith andthedifficultiesthey faced should challenge us to use every opportunity and resource available to make sure futuregenerationsareawareofourfaithfulnessandwhatwe'vedonetocontributeto their spiritual welfare. William (Bill) Deitz. For over 25 years he has had an insatiable interest in church history. He has collected church histories and newspaper clippings about all m Ji churches in Brunswick County. His files fill several boxes. Most ofthis information came to him as a result ofourNation's Bicentennial (1976) Celebration. One ofthe projects ofthe Bicentennial Commission was to collect the church histories ofall denominations in the county. Mrs. Berlyn S. Lancasterborrowed church recordsand wrote approximately ten church histories. She and Mrs. Susan S. Carson were invaluable sources ofhelp for Rev. Deitz. Mrs. Carson wrote several church histories and served as atypist and editor forhim. Many are the people who have been ofassistance to me. Mr. John W. Butler proved to be most helpful in locating associational records and unpublished documents. He was able to provide names and clues that would help make my search for information easier. While serving as Associational Clerk he prepared the church histories that appeared in the annual minutes. One ofhis most important contributions was the Digest ofGrowth, 1899-1971. He wasan encouragerwhen I seemedto reach adead end. Mr. ButlertraveledthecountytakingWpMicUturesofthechurches and often made return trips to getjust the right picture. Mrs. SWusMaUn S. Carson provided the history forwhich I am most grateful. Thiswastrulya product ofherlove forthe and the association. Shehas served faithfully for over 50 years in many roles ofleadership, once serving as Associational Clerk. Rev. William L. Smith, Director of Missions, and Mrs. Patricia Lewis, office secretary, havecooperated with metothe fullestextent.Neverwas I denied accessto associational records ordocuments. On everyoccasion Mrs. Lewis assisted me, eventothepointofsearch- ingfilesforinformation. Sheproved tobearesourceofcurrentknowledgeonthestatusofchurchesandtheirleaders. Numerous churches responded to my request for their updated histories and/or pictures. Thanks to Beach Road, Calvary, Community Chapel, Elah, Faith, Goshen, Gospel Center, Longwood, Mill Creek, New Ebenezer, New Life, Peace Memorial, Prospect and Sabbath Home, and Soldier Bay churches. Ms. Rachel MillerofMillerPrintingprovedtobe invaluableasaneditorandadvisor. Herhumorousapproach totheproblemsofpublication madethejobseem effortless. Ms. CharleneHockett, typesetter, spentmanylonghours at the computer. She worked diligently to prepare the material forprinting. Both ladies aretrue professionals. Most ofthe words in this book are from other people. I gleaned their reports to the Associational Meetings, extracted the minutesofthe Executive Board Meetings, read their lettersand correspondences, searchedthrough and readhundredsofwritten historiesand listenedtotheirvoicesastheyreminiscedandreflectedonthepast. Withoutthe assistance ofyou, the associational members, this compilation would not have been possible. Becauseofour faithfulnesswecan rejoiceasGod's Kingdom moves forward in the Brunswick BaptistAsso- ciation. Gwen Causey Editor
