AgraduateofVirginiaCommonwealthUniversity,Dr.Morellattendedmedicalschoola theMedical CollegeofVirginiawith aU.S.AirForceHealthProfessionsScholarship. Shefirs arrivedatBowmanGraySchoolofMedicinein 1983tocompleteherresidencyinFamilyMedicim including one year as Chief Resident. Dr. Morell continued her medicine career as a staff physician in the U.S. Air Force in Washington until returning to Bowman Gray in 1990 as ai Assistant Professor. Shewas recentlypromotedtoAssociate ProfessorintheFamilyMedicim Department. AsAssociateProfessorofFamilyandCommunityMedicine.Dr.Morellservesonmany committees that work tobetterthe curriculum and meet the needs ofstudents. The Committee on Undergraduate Medical Education, the Dean's Advisory Committee, and the Phase III, IV, andVCommittees arejustafewofherresponsibilities in additiontoherchairingthePhysiciai Assistant Advisory Committee. Although she staysbusy with herclinical duties intheFamily MedicineDepartment,DrMorellcontinuestobeactiveinthelivesofstudents. Shehastouche( manystudentsasDirectorofboththeCommunityContinuityCourseandtheFamilyandCommunity Medicine Predoctoral EducationProgram. SheisalsoinvolvedwiththePhysicianAssistantProgram. ForyearsDr. Morellhai welcomed students intoherhome asFaculty AdvisortotheFamilyMedicine InterestGroup. Dr. Brenda Latham-Sadler completed her undergraduate education at Pace University and arrived at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1978 to obtain her medical degree. She stayed at Bowman Gray in the Family Medicine Residency Program to complete her training. Afterresidency Dr. Latham-Sadler entered private practice and remained there until 1989. At thattime,shereturnedtoBowmanGrayasAssistantProfessorintheFamilyMedicineDepartment. Like Dr. Morell, Dr. Latham-Sadler's schedule stays full because of her extensive involvementinthemedical school. SheisDirectoroftheThirdYearFamilyMedicineClerkship andFacultyAdvisortotheStudentNationalMedicalAssociation. Studentsmayalsoremember herrole as facilitator for several courses including the Doctor Patient Relationship course, the Primary Care/Basic Science Clinical Correlation Seminar, and Medicine as a Profession. She alsoservesonnumerouscommitteesincludingthePredoctoralEducationCommittee,thePhysician AssistantAdmissionCommittee,theSubcommitteeonPreceptorRecruitment,andmanyothers. In addition to her contributions to the medical school. Dr. Latham-Sadler ^^^ manages to be active in the community. She is involved with the Salemi i College Women's Leadership Connection Mentor Program, the Public! "B'DPOnn nnoB1 AffairsCommitteeofForsyth-Stokes-DavieCountyMedicalSociety, and YouthOpportunities,Inc. nncnu PtiDnn ^^, AlthoughDrMorellandDrLatham-Sadlerholdnumerouspositions in and around the medical school, they are most remarkable for their opennessanddedicationtohelpingthe studentsthatcrosstheirpathseach day. Their offices are always open and serve as a revolving door for. smdentsthatfeelwelcomedbytheirkindness,intriguedbytheirinsight,and' comforted by their humor. It is these attributes, as well as their othea '^^It^-i contributionstoonumeroustomention,thatmakeDr.MorellandDr.Latham-I !L^:.-:*3^ Sadlerdeservingofthisdedicationofthe2001 GrayMatter. Dedication Acknowledgements Dr. Velma Gibson Watts has been a much loved and appreciated member of the WFUSM family in her roles as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Director ofMinority Affairs, and Associate ProfessorofMedical Education. During her 16 years at WFUSM, Dr. Watts created various programs toassistacademicallytalentedminorityhighschool,college,andgraduatestudentsintheirquesttobecome physicians. Through herefforts, the university acquired more than $4 million dollars in grants to fund projectstodevelopminorityphysiciansandscientists. Dr.Wattshelped develop the post baccalaureate program in 1987. She has also given many presentations at both national and local conferences and held officeinseveralhospitalandcommunityorganizations. Dr. WattsattendedA&TState University inGreensboro, NC hereshereceivedaBS inelementaryeducationin 1955 andanMS ineducationin 1960. She ME enwentontoreceivean inearlychildhoodeducationandsupervisionandadministration om the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1969. Her PhD in educational dministration wasreceivedin 1980atDukeUniversity. Dr. Watts retiredon May 31 and was namedAssociate ProfessorEmeritus ofMedical iiucation. We wish to acknowledge her for her tremendous dedication and commitment to ducation at WFUSM. Dr. Timothy Pennell has been a lifetime "Demon Deacon". He received his BS from Wake ForestUniversityin 1955andhisMDatBowmanGraySchoolofMedicinein 1960. Aftergraduating,he completed residencies in General and Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at BowmanGray. Sincethen, Dr. Pennellhas shownequalcommitmentanddedication toWFUSM inhis rolesasProfessorofSurgery,DirectorofInternational Health Affairs, and ChiefofProfessional Services. AstheDirectorofInternationalHealthAffairs, Dr.Pennellhasassistedcountlessstudentsinarranging rotations abroad. He has also been instrumental in establishing missionary hospitals overseas and has aveledextensivelybothforpleasureandtopracticemedicineinunderserved ^^^^^^^^^ 1^"^ <=' / -eas. In hisfreetime. Dr.Pennellenjoysflyfishing. Dr. Pennell has recently stepped down from his position as Chiefof ^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^V ^^ rofessional Services, but he will continue to teach medical students and <ii^- jsidents. Weacknowledgehimforhisongoingcommitmentandloyaltytohis amily, colleagues, students, andpatients. His kind disposition and service to lecommunity set anexemplary example forall.
