GENERAL INFORMATION North CarolinaAgricultural and Technical State University HISTORICAL STATEMENT Today, one ofthe nation's leading Historically BlackColleges and Universities (HBCU), NorthCarolinaAgriculturalandTechnicalStateUniversityisclassifiedasaCarnegiedoctoral/ researchintensiveuniversitythatisrecognizedasthetop-producinguniversityforAfricanAmeri- can engineers and technologists. The University's programs have numerous accreditations in- cluding the first nationally accreditedAACSB international accounting program in the nation amongHBCUs.Theuniversity'shistoryasoneofonlyeighteen 1890land-grantuniversitiesis well reflected in agriculture, animal science, environmental science, engineering, andtechnol- ogy programs, and agrowing studentenrollmentis afurtherreflection ofthe demands forthe North CarolinaA&T's programs in education, nursing, and arts and sciences. North Carolina A&Talsohasarichcivilrightslegacy,anditsstudents,especiallytheGreensboroFourwhoare creditedwithbeginningthe sit-inmovement,playedaprominentroleinthe 1960s. Today'suniversityhaschangedagreatdealfromtheAgriculturalandMechanicalCollege forthe "ColoredRace" establishedby an actofthe GeneralAssemblyofNorthCarolinarati- fied onMarch 9, 1891. The Collegeactuallybegan operationduringthe school yearof 1890- 91, beforethepassageofthe statelawcreatingit. Thescopeofdegreeprogramshasbeenexpandedtomeetnewdemands.Thefirstgraduate degreewas approvedwhentheGeneralAssemblyauthorizedtheinstitutiontogranttheMaster ofScience degree in education and certain otherfields in 1939. The first Master's degree was awardedin 1941. In 1957 the GeneralAssembly repealed previous acts describing the purpose ofthe Col- legeandredefineditspurpose"toteachtheAgriculturalandTechnicalArtsandSciences"and addedaheavyemphasistostrengtheningitseffortstotrain "teachers, supervisors, andadmin- istratorsfor thepublic schools ofthe State" especially preparing them to earn the Master's degree. NorthCarolina'sGeneralAssemblyvotedtoelevatetheCollegetothestatusofaRegional Universityeffective July 1, 1967. On October30, 1971, theGeneralAssemblyratified anAct to consolidate the Institutions ofHigherLearning in North Carolina. Underthe provisions of this Act, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University became a constituent institution ofThe University ofNorthCarolinaeffectiveJuly 1, 1972. Ninepresidents/chancellorshaveservedNorthCarolinaA&Tsinceitwasfoundedin1891 They are: Dr. J. O. Crosby (1892-1896), Dr. James B. Dudley (1896-1925), Dr. F. D. Bluford (1925-1955), Dr. Warmoth T. Gibbs (1956-1960), Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor (1960-1964), Dr. LewisC. Dowdy (1964-1980), Dr. CleonF.Thompson (InterimChancellor- 1980-1981), Dr. EdwardB. Fort (1981-1999), andDr. James C. Renick(1999-Present). MISSION, PURPOSEAND GOALS OFTHE UNIVERSITY Mission Statement North CarolinaAgricultural andTechnical State University is apublic, doctoral/research intensive, land-grant university committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through ex- emplaryundergraduateandgraduateinstruction, scholarlyandcreativeresearch, andeffective public service. The university offers degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels with emphasis on agriculture, engineering, science, technology, literature and UncompromisingExcellence:ABlueprintfortheFuture other academic areas. As one ofNorth Carolina's three engineering colleges, the university offers Ph.D. programs in engineering. Basic and applied research is conducted by faculty in university centers ofexcellence,in interinstitutional relationships,andthrough significant in- volvement with several public and private agencies. The university also conducts major re- searchthroughengineering,transportation,and itsextensionprograms inagriculture.
