On July 1, 1997, Towson State University became Towson University, a change that reflects its evolution from a state- supported to a state-assisted institution. As of January 2004, the university has graduated 97,272 students. Since 1960, Towson Univer- sity has awarded 12,403 advanced degrees. Towson University enrolls and graduates more undergraduate students from the region than any other institution. Enrollment for the 2003 fallsemesterwas 13,981 undergraduates and 3,207graduate students. 6 TOWSON UNIVERSITY Letter from the Dean of the College of Graduate Education and Research TowsonUniversity introduced its firstgraduate degree program, a master's in elementary ed- ucation,in 1958. Sincethen, theGraduateSchoolhasgrowntooffernearly 60graduatedegrees and certificate programs serving more than 3,000 students. The College ofGraduate Education and Research continues to help thousands stay ahead ofchange and in top demand by offering programs in the liberal and fine arts, teachereducation, allied health fields, computerand infor- mation technology, natural sciences, social sciences, various professional disciplines and inter- disciplinary areas. The full- and part-time programs are led by nationally prominent faculty who combine theory and applied, practical knowledge while encouragingcollaboration on research projects and cre- ative productions. Students have the opportunity to learn in an environment complemented by the diverse perspectives and experiences oftheirpeers who hail from a variety ofgeographic lo- cations, cultures and ethnic backgrounds. As the metropolitan university ofMaryland, Towson offersa valuable, yet affordable educa- tion that blends advanced levels ofstudy with innovative conveniences. Graduate students may registeronline, utilizeacademic andcareerservices, enjoysmallclass sizesandaccessible faculty. Classes are offered both during the day and in the evening at the suburban Baltimore campus and at off-site locations in Harford, Baltimore, Montgomery and St. Mary's counties. In 2002-2003, Towson was awarded nearly $18 million in research grants and contracts. These funds have enabled TU to offer research opportunities to Towson students, support the scholarlyactivitiesofourfacultyandengageinpartnershipswith business,communityandgov- ernment agencies. As the demands ofthe work force change, the College ofGraduate Education and Research will strive to prepare students by offering a sound balance oftheory and application, and con- tinue doing what we do best - bringing teaching and learning together to provide an excellent learning experience.
