DARIN COUNTY FREE LIBRPRY . länUCr 31111002578894 Max Hirmer sculpture in m\cc mo-mo A B R A M S » 730524 his is the first comprehensive, fully ~ o I - 00 documented, and fully illustrated study L CO of French cathedral sculpture during - the period 1140—1270. In the introduc- " IT) tion, Dr. Sauerländer surveys the spread -" orvj "-0 of Gothic sculpture from the royal domain and its neighboring territories in central and southern France, discus- sing style, subject matter, iconography, and the historical background. His m fascinating study of the factors which led to the creation of such masterpieces as the Royal Portal at Chartres and the Coronation Portal of Notre Dame in Paris is supported by numerous photo- graphs and illustrations which bring out the magnificence of conception and execution, as well as details ofindividual sculptures. Comparisons of related works (for example, the renderings of the Majestas, the Last Judgment, or the Ascension in various churches) provide valuable information on the diffusion and regional variations of styles, and also reveal some of the architectural problems faced by the designers of the complex portal programs. The docu- mentation section summarizes the present state of our knowledge of each work, and gives bibliographical references. — Many of the works discussed nota- bly those in the cathedrals of Chartres — and Rheims are familiar, but many others, including those in lofty and inaccessible positions, are hardly known to the public, and have been specially photographed for this book. Works which have been damaged or destroyed in modern times are reproduced from contemporary engravings, and are in- cluded in the documentation section for comparison with the extant sculptures illustrated in the plates. Dr. Sauerländer is Director of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich and an international authority on Gothic sculpture. 'Oj illustrations t tiding 4 hand-mounted •dl color [. /f^.
