Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Series Editor: Walter Leal Filho Walter Leal Filho · Tony Wall Anabela Marisa Azul · Luciana Brandli Pinar Gökcin Özuyar Editors Good Health and Well-Being Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals Series Editor WalterLealFilho The problems related to the process of industrialization such as biodiversity depletion, climate change, and a worsening of health and living conditions, especiallybutnotonlyindevelopingcountries, intensify. Therefore, thereis alsoanincreasingneedtosearchforintegratedsolutionstomakedevelopment more sustainable. The current model of economic growth used by many countries is heavily based on the exploitation of natural resources, which is not viable. Evidence shows that a more careful, that is, a more sustainable, approachtotheuseofourlimitedresourcesisneeded. The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and, among other measures, itproducedasetofdocumentsattheUNConferenceonSustainable Development(Rio+20),heldinRiodeJaneiro, Brazil,in2012.In2015,the UNGeneralAssemblyapprovedthe“2030AgendaforSustainableDevelop- ment.”OnJanuary1,2016,the17SustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs)of theAgendaofficiallycameintoforce.Thesegoalscoverthethreedimensions ofsustainabledevelopment:economicgrowth,socialinclusion,andenviron- mentalprotection. There are to date no comprehensive publications addressing the SDGs in an integratedway.Therefore,theEncyclopediaoftheUNSustainableDevelop- ment Goals isbeing published. It encompasses 17volumes,each devotedto oneofthe17SDGs.
