Florida has been getting record amounts of rain this summer. The culvert running from Second Avenue to Third Avenue needed to be cleaned out again to handle the large amount of water going through it. We had it cleaned two years ago and it refilled with dirt from the storm water runoff. We have been having work done on our water piping. We had six valves replaced in the system. We had a problem with the new valves they were the wrong valves installed. We did not realize they were the wrong valves and had them replaced as soon as we were told. I am very sorry about this mistake and hope we are more aware of what we are buying to be installed in our park. They were only in a couple of weeks so we hired a water testing company to check out our water. The board received the proposed budget from Progressive Management for 2016. PMI and most of the board proposed a five dollar increase in maintenance fees for next year. We think it is easier on everyone if these increases are small ones every two or three years than having large increases all at once. Since I have lived in the park we have always voted to partially fund our reserves. The difference between fully funded and partially funded is eighty nine dollars a month in maintenance fees per unit. We are still very well off financially but we are trying to stay ahead because our income keeps dropping every year. The board looks at everything we can to lower our cost for basic services like water, sewer, lawn, gas, and other fixed cost. You will be receiving a copy of the proposed budget next month to go over before the meeting on November 18th. The last time I talked with Jo Ellen we still only have two places for sale. The selling season will start in the next month or so and these two places will sell fast. I hope everyone is having a safe and happy summer and will see you soon in Golden Acres our winter home. 3 From the Editor’s Desk By Sue Bailey [email protected] Autumn was my favorite time of the year when I lived in the north. Those beautiful tree covered hills full of vibrant colors. In Florida it's also my favorite time of the year because it represents cooler weather from the summer heat and humidity and also because our northern residents will be preparing to come back to Golden Acres and we will be reunited again! Within this newsletter are articles and pictures from some of our residents and a couple of Mobile Collection schedules from our county. Not too much has been happening here at Golden Acres recreation-wise since we have had so much heat and so many thunderstorms. We've just been staying indoors to keep cool and dry. October comes from the Latin word Octo (meaning eight) because in ancient Rome October was the eighth month of the year. Although it's now the tenth month, it retained its original name. The birthstones of October are opal and tourmaline. Both come in a variety of colors and are known for displaying multiple colors in one stone. The flower is the calendula (pot marigold), symbolizing sorrow or sympathy. As everyone knows, on October 31st we celebrate Halloween with haunts, scares, ghouls, costumes and of course trick or treating. If you are traveling to Golden Acres this month, have a safe and enjoyable journey. Until next time, May God bless and keep you well and safe… Thanksgiving Dinner By Joe & Paula Bunevith Just a little note that the recreation committee will once again provide Turkeys for our annual Club House Thanksgiving Dinner in November. Joe and Paula Bunevith will be in charge of the dinner and a notice and sign up will be posted on the bulletin board. Hope to see you there. 4 October Return By Kurt Nova My sweetheart Gail and I will be returning in October and will begin a redo to modernize inside coach 177. We are grateful to all that have expressed friendship in the very short time we have had a chance to meet. Bev and Gary Collins, Don Webb, and Brenda and Pat Neafsey are at the top of the list, along with Ron Winders for introducing us over a four year timeframe convincing us Golden Acres is the place to be. Back North it was sweet seeing Roz Frabotta at an Elvis and Orbison Show in Cleveland. Gail and I will be enjoying some Shuffleboard and the swimming pool on hot days and I have a list of jokes to tell so be prepared for a few laughs. See you soon, unless you see me first. LOL Kurt Nova "Elvis Lives" 5 Taylor Tournament By Lorne & Cheryl Taylor Another successful Taylor Family Open... Lorne and Cheryl hosted a barbecue after the 11th Annual Taylor Open Golf Tournament. Golf, food, and even the weather was great! Here are the young family members who attended. Good times for all! 6 End of Summer in Cape Cod, MA By Paula & Joe Bunevith Well summer is coming to an end here at Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Joe and I live in a fishing club, along with Ginny and Ray (unit 9), Tom and Elaine (unit 189), and Paul and Janet (unit 74). The summer started off a wee bit on the cold side. In fact sweatshirts were the item most of us were wearing back in May. Then summer finally arrived and here it is September and Temperatures are still in the high 80's. The pictures are of the Railroad Bridge which crosses the Cape Cod Canal along with the Bourne Bridge. The Railroad runs 4 to 6 times a day and boats in the canal have to go into idle mode when the bridge is down. No one is allowed to go under while a train crosses. Most of the time the bridge is up. The Bourne Bridge is one of two bridges that cross the canal. The Sagamore Bridge is the second one and they look alike. Fishing this summer had its ups and downs. Some nice Black Bass, and Striped Bass were caught. A seagull had found a crab and was trying to open it by walking back and forth into the canal road to crack it open. He would drop the crab and if anything or anyone got close to him he would grab it and run. The canal road is a walking, bike riding road, no motorized vehicles, except anyone in a motorized wheel chair and the Corp. of Engineers who control the canal. The paved Canal road runs approx. 7 miles on both sides. Nice area for bike riding and walking. 7 The Osprey was squawking her head off as we approached her in our boat as we circled around to take a picture, she took off. And gave us a great picture. Joe and I spent 3 weeks visiting family in California and Nevada. The month of August was gone when we got back and so was the summer heat for at least 2 weeks. Hope all of you enjoyed your summer as much as we have. See all of you in Golden Acres in October. Love to All...
