The conference was organized by Research Centre Kairos (Tomsk, Russia) and held in an online format to make it available to a diverse audienceofacademics.Theeventmetover100participants.Theconferenceaimed to focus on a variety of issues such as interdisciplinary pedagogy, language teachingandlearning, culturalstudiesandlinguistics.Aspecialconcernwasgiven to global academic integration and professional development for research. The following topics were discussed in detail: (cid:129) Educational environments (cid:129) Language teaching and learning (cid:129) Lifelong learning (cid:129) Cultural studies (cid:129) Linguistic studies (cid:129) Practices for global research The event was important for several reasons. First, it became the platform for academics to discuss current trends and prospects in a variety of issues within Social Sciences and Humanities. In addition, the foundations of doing research globally as well as other relevant topics were considered. Second, the event became a part of the project What it takes to be a researcher carried out in Research Centre Kairos. The project aimed to support Russian aca- demics to function in an international English-speaking academic context. One ofthestrandswithintheactivitieswaslaunchingwritingsupportprogrammeswith the focus on various aspects of academic writing. Although we received positive feedback about our support, such an approach turned to be weak to provide sus- tainable change in Russian academics’ scholarly publishing. Our evaluation of the initiatives we had undertaken affected the direction of our current projects and futureplans.Whatweconcludedisthatwefailedtotakewritingforpublicationas asocialprocessexistinginawidercontext.Forthatreason, participationinGGSSH v vi Preface 2019 resulting in paper publication became an important step contributing to Russian academics’ publishing experience. Third, the event was important for Research Centre Kairos, since it became the sourceofRussianacademics’perceptionsandassumptionsaboutkeychallengesin doingresearchglobally.Thisknowledgewilldevelopabetterunderstandingofthe factors that may contribute to the design of professional development schemes to enhance Russian academics’ performance in research practices on a global scale. This is our next big job to be done. Along with that, the project promises to be of much benefit to non-English-speaking academic community beyond Russia chal- lenged to communicate their research through the medium of English. WewouldliketothankAdvancesinIntelligentSystemsandComputingfortheir supportinourimportantwork.Wearealsogratefultotheacademicswhotookpart in GGSSH 2019. They made the event a worthwhile platform for development. We look forward to seeing you next year.
