Index 229 Preface The substance of the commentaries on the Seven Sermons to the Dead was delivered by the author in a class in the psychology of religion at the Institute for the Study of Religion East and West of the University of California at Los Angeles in the Spring Quarter of 1977. The Prologue, "Premonition of an Inescapable World of Shadows," was originally published in Psychological Perspectives (of the C.G. Jung Institute, Los Angeles) Spring issue, 1982. The author is profoundly grateful to the following facilitators of this book: The Academy of Creative Education, and its president, Dr. James C. Ingerbretsen, whose grant of funds made the writing possible. The Ourobouros Circle of Beverly Hills, California, and its generous host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Malvin. Irene Malvin, for specially creating and donating her drawing of Abraxas for this work. Professor John Algeo who, while reading the manuscript, enriched its quality with valuable suggestions.
