'-win G0 Along /ig in ITALIAN A HOLIDAY Magazine Language Book By Mario Pei This book, like its companion volumes, stems from Professor Pei's lively and HOLIDAY popular articles in on the important languages of the world. His article on Italian, in revised form, is the opening chapter of Getting Along in Italian, providing the historical back- ground of the language and telling some- thing about the people who speak it. A frontispiece map shows the areas of the world where Italian is commonly spoken. Professor Pei and his assistants have spared no effort to make this book the most comprehensive and the easiest to use in the field. It contains a phrase sec- tion of more than one hundred pages, arranged under twenty-four useful classi- fications; the Italian translation of each phrase is accompanied by an easy-to- pronounce phonetic transcription. The phrase section is followed by a digest of the grammar of the language for readers who want to extend their knowledge beyond conversational phrases. The vo- cabulary sections are extensive and offer both English-Italian and Italian-English listings. In the English-Italian vocabu- lary, phonetic transcriptions are given throughout. Getting Along in Italian is an attrac- tive, convenient book for the traveler and the beginning student of Italian.
