Mario Pei was born in Rome and came to this country as a small boy. He was educated in New York, taught at City College from 1923 to 1927, and has been at Columbia ever since. During World War II Professor Pei created a thirty-seven language course at Columbia, called "The World's Chief Languages." He has broadcast for the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe in French, Italian, German, Dutch, Czech and Rumanian. Except, possibly, for one member of the United Nations Secretariat, Mario Pei has been said to read, speak and understand more languages than any other living man.
