It was freshman year of high school and I was in love. The recipient of my longing affection, a sophomore and my high school’s only male member of the pole-vaulting team with a four-o’- clock shadow, had just nearly escaped a medicine ball that was hurled at his head by one of the star sprinters. The ball came rolling into my path on the track. Weak in the knees from hearing his angelic voice calling for me to toss him the ball back, not to mention the 200-meter sprints I was running, I mustered up every ounce of energy I had left and sprinted towards the ball. As a die-hard soccer player who only moonlit as a track star to appease the pestering coach who had noticed me my first day of high school P.E. my first instinct when I saw that blue ball rolling across the track was to kick it. I somehow thought in that split second that my kicking the ball back to the hunky boy with the long stick was my only hope at escaping teenage loneliness and the best chance I had at marriage barring an unlikely arranged marriage. Thoughts of me and him frolicking through the grass in our matching track shorts and holding hands at our future’s son’s wedding clouded my vision as I approached the lethal ball. DDoonn’’tt KKiicckk TThhee BBaallllss With one swift kick I was on my face. The ball, which I now discovered was heavy and not at all like a soccer ball, had foiled all of my hopes at impressing my could-have-been- beau. The romantic bubble burst and my first love faded as quickly as it came. As I surveyed the damage, bleeding knees, a road rash shoulder, and a face that looked like I just got run over by a truck, my better judgment took; how could I marry someone who was doubled over in laughter at the sight of my blood? Yes, my first encounter with a medicine ball is one I, and now likely you, will never forget. But as I picked myself up off the track a new obsession took the place of the boy – I would redeem myself by mastering the medicine ball. Now my workout weapon of choice, the medicine ball has helped me train for championship matches, sculpt my body for my swimsuit modeling days, get back in shape after giving birth to my son, and, most importantly, helps me torture friends and clients who pay good money for me to do just that. And of course I’m not alone. Something this good is bound to be popular, which is why the medicine ball is a staple in nearly every home gym and professional trainer’s repertoire. A global phenomenon since William “Iron Duke” Muldoon, a nineteenth-century wrestling champion and boxing trainer, invented the training device, now medicine balls come in a wide variety of colors and weights, anywhere from two to sixty pounds. JJooiinn TThhee RRaannkkss ooff PPrrooffeessssiioonnaall TTrraaiinneerrss aanndd CCeelleebbrriittiieess Take for example actress Stacy Keibler and her trainer, Juliet Kaska, who use medicine balls to help tone Keibler’s core and butt. Keibler says that within four weeks of doing these workouts she feels “more confident” and gets “compliments on my butt all the time now.” And then there is superstar Vanessa Hudgens, who used medicine balls with her Los Angeles trainer Logan Hood to help create a buff physique for her kick-butt role in the movie Sucker Punch, a 2011 “Kill Bill meets Inception” fantasy- action flick directed by Zack Snyder. According to her trainer, the intense workouts helped to prove to the young actress that she is “stronger than she imagined.” Busy? Just had a baby? That is nothing that a kick-butt medicine ball workout can’t handle. One look at Elisabeth Rohm’s, the 39-year-old actress, body will convince you. After giving birth to her daughter the actress turned her exercise regimen up a notch (including strength moves with weighted balls) and the result was an impressive 75-pound weight loss according to Shape magazine. It is the only thing standing in between you and the sexy, sculpted body of your dreams – just be sure to not kick it. Have Fun and Get In Shape! Julie
