We could not have written it had it not been for the heroic women who came before us. We would like to recognize and cel- ebrate all those who had the courage to live and work abroad. We could not have written this book without the contributions of many people, and we thank them all. At the top of this list are four of the sensational women profiled herein: Anna Catalano, Diane Gulyas, Jacqualyn Fouse, and Patricia Kranz. Their thought- ful insight, good humor, and significant contribution of time— hundreds of combined hours—made the book much richer in texture and quality. We are also grateful to all the women who contributed quotes and took our survey online. Their personal anecdotes and stories added the human touch necessary to cre- ate a fun and lively text as seen through the eyes of real women who’d been there, and it encouraged us to continue to believe in the power of our idea. We owe much gratitude to Steve Einhorn, friend and colleague, whose expert advice and guidance ensured our idea was backed up by credible third-party research. We also thank Steve McGarry for his professional insight and thoughtful commentary on today’s global citizen. We are grateful to our friends who took the time to read the vii Acknowledgments manuscript before final submission: Annica Johansson, Michael Jacob Nevadomski, Carolyn Tieger, and Rebecca Weiner; we ap- preciate their thoughtful and honest feedback. Last but not least, much appreciation goes to our agent, Denise Marcil; our publisher, HarperCollins; and our editor, Toni Sciarra. They took a chance on two new authors, believing in us and help- ing us creatively mold our idea into the book you hold in your hands. From Stacie I owe infinite gratitude to my husband, Mike, a published writer and former high school English teacher, for his enduring support, almost unending patience, and oh-so-honest editorial feedback throughout the writing process. I’m a much better writer today because of his loving attention. I appreciate my two wonderful daughters, Connie and Betty, who at the tender age of six grasped the importance of my writing this book—many times at the expense of weekends and excur- sions without me—and supported me with their warm hugs and fan club letters. They are future women of the world, and I wrote this book with them in mind. Loving thanks go to my mom, Constance Nevadomski, who has respected my individuality for as long as I can remember, and in memory of my father, Andrew Nevadomski, who inspired in me a love of travel and adventure. To my brothers and sisters— Nadine, Laura, Michael, Amy, Matthew, Ellen, and the spirit of my brother, A.J.—with whom I shared many fun-filled domestic and international adventures; being one of eight children certainly prepared me for navigating the complexities of corporate life. I must give thanks to my mentors and colleagues at Burson- Marsteller who provided an intense training ground and fulfill- Acknowledgments viii ing professional home for twelve years. I will always be grateful to Carolyn Tieger and Bill Johnston, who took the time to men- tor me in the early stages of my career and who encouraged me to move abroad. Heartfelt thanks also go to my Hong Kong col- leagues whose friendship made my years in Hong Kong so much richer and rewarding. From Perry I must give my thanks first to those who have supported me in my journey from the beginning—my parents, Sandy and Penn Yeat- man, and my siblings, Heather and P.J. I never would’ve had the nerve to leave the United States if I hadn’t known they would be back at home, sending their love and being ready to support me, however needed. I have also been blessed by a wonderful extended family. I thank my grandmothers, Dorothy Yeatman and Grace Perry, for being ahead of their time and showing me it was OK for a woman to be strong, opinionated, and self-sufficient. I’d also like to thank my aunts and uncles who were always so supportive and generous. I’m glad my wanderlust enabled us to spend so many great times together. As for friends, despite my ever changing address, or per- haps because of it, I’ve gotten to know some of the most fabulous men and women in the world. I consider myself lucky to be able to call them my friends. More recently, I’ve been blessed to have my own family. To my husband, Christian, I will forever be grateful fate saw fit to put our traveling souls in the same town at the same time. I couldn’t have found a better partner for life’s most amazing adventure—parent- hood. To Kirsten and André, I could never fully express the joy and wonder they have added to my life so I will simply thank them for just being exactly who they are. ix Acknowledgments Finally, to all my bosses, colleagues, and clients, I will always be grateful for the lessons they taught me, the patience they showed me, the trust they put in me, and the opportunities they gave me— especially my current employer, Kraft Foods.
