The originalstatedpurposeoftheGeologyFoundationwassimple—tofosterandtopromotethegrowth,progress,anddevelopment ofgeologicaleducation,research,andgraduatestudy.Thatpurposeisthesame50yearslater. In1953,theDepartmentofGeologyconsistedof14activefaculty, 18part-timeteachingfellows,and21studentassistants.Bylaw, eachfacultymembertaughtatleast9semesterhourspersemester.Theannualoperatingbudgetwas$123,000,andin1953,theDepartment graduated718.5./B.A.students, 26M.A. students, and 3 Ph.D. students. TheBureau of EconomicGeologyhad fewer than 10scientistsandabudgetcomparabletothatoftheDepartment.TheInstituteforGeophysicsdidnotexist. Shortlyafterformation,theFoundationhadtotalassetsof$1010,butatthefirstmeetingoftheFoundation'sAdvisoryCouncilin thefallof1955,theCouncilsetanambitiousgoalofgenerating$90,000peryearinsupportofthegeosciences atTheUniversitytocome fromexpendablegiftsanddistributionsfromendowments,orequalto75 percentofthethenoperatingbudgetoftheDepartment. Intoday's dollarsthatincome goalwasabout$60,000.Now,50 yearslater, theGeologyFoundationgenerates about$3 million fromendowmentdistributionsandreceives annualexpendablegifts onthe orderof$400,000per year,nearlysixtimes theoriginal, ambitiousgoal. AlthoughanumberofpeoplewereinvolvedtheideaofaGeologyFoundation,itisfairtosaythatthecentralplayerswereMr.LeonidasT "Slim"Barrow,thenChairmanoftheBoardofHumbleOilandRefiningCompany,andDr.SamuelP.Ellison,Jr., thenChairmanof theDepartmentofGeology.Samwasrecruitedfromthepetroleumindustryin1948andbecameChairmanoftheDepartmentin1952. Hewas toserveasExecutiveSecretaryorDirectoroftheFoundationuntil1970. TheinitialmembersoftheGeologyFoundationAdvisoryCouncilwere15prominentindustrypeople.Mr.Barrowdidnotservethe firstyear—he joinedthenextyear—buttheExecutiveVicePresidentofHumbleOilandRefiningCompany,MorganJ.Davis,wasthefirst Chairman,andthefirstCouncilalsoincludedMr.WallaceE.Pratt,HumblesChiefGeologist,andoneofthemostprominentpetroleum geologistsofalltime.TheinitialmembersoftheAdvisoryCouncil,inadditiontoDavisandPratt,broughttogethersuchimportantcorporate executivesasEverettDeGolyer,ChairmanofDeGolyerandMacNaughton,W.DowHamm,VicePresidentofAtlanticRefiningCompany, G.Moses"Mose"Knebel,ManagerofExplorationDivision,StandardOilCompanyofNewJersey,LeonardF.McCollum,Presidentof ContinentalOilCompany,O.ScottPetty,Sr.,PresidentofPettyGeophysicalEngineeringCompany,SheridanA.Thompson,VicePresident ofMagnoliaPetroleumCompany,andCharlesE.Yager,PresidentofSouthlandRoyaltyCompany.Prominentindependentsonthefirst CouncilwereWayneF.Bowman,RobertL.Cannon,GeorgeH.Coates,GuyE."Squire"Green,JohnA.Kay,andEdgarW.Owen. MorganDavisservedasChairmanforthefirst7yearsoftheCouncil;SquireGreensucceededhimfora3-yearterm,andTomBarrow servedfor 5 yearsfollowing. The Councilstuckto the goalofraising funds.Duringthefirstyear,theyraised$70,000ingiftsand endowments;within10 yearsFoundationendowmentsreached$500,000,and10yearsafterthat,endowmentsexceededthemillion- dollarmark.By1976, assetsamountedto$1.5million,andby1979,$2million.Inthelate1970'sandearly1980's,theCouncil,chaired byJosephC.Walter,Jr.,andlaterDonR.Boyd,sawFoundationassetsenlargedsignificantly.Thecombinationofrelativelyhighoilprices, the,programofRegentalmatchingofmajorgifts, andthegenerosityofmembersandfriendsgaveamajorboostto theFoundation, sothatby1984 themarketvalueoftheFoundationassetsstoodatanimpressive$10million.Overthepastcoupleofdecades,underthe directionofWilliamL.Fisher,Foundationassetshavesoared,reachingapeakof$57millionin2000,andinthefaceofabrutalmarket inthepast2years,nowstandingat$53million. In2001,JohnA.Jackson,amemberoftheAdvisoryCouncilsince1975,enteredtheFoundationpictureinabigwaybycontributing, withhiswife,Katie,$25milliontotheFoundationtosupportthenewJacksonSchoolofGeosciences.In2002,Jackindicatedhisintent toleavetheresidueofhis estateto theFoundation, whichaccordingtohis financialadvisor,wasthenvaluedatbetween$150and $200million.Sadly,Mr.JacksondiedonMarch21,2003,amonthbeforethededicationoftheexpandedGeologicalSciencesbuilding heandKatiemadepossiblethroughtheir generousdonation.ProbateCourtfilingsinJune2003andthereportoftheExecutorof Mr.Jackson'sestateindicatethattheGeologyFoundationwillreceiveinexcessof$250million,whichwithcurrentassets willexceed $300million. From that first vision and the statedgoalsof50 yearsago,the GeologyFoundationis today withoutpeer inresources,and TheUniversityandtheUniversitygeosciencecommunityowethemembersandleadersoftheFoundationAdvisoryCouncilagreatdebt. Throughthe50-yearhistoryoftheGeologyFoundation,145distinguishedgeoscientistsfromindustry,government,andacademia haveservedonits AdvisoryCouncil;45 currentlyserve.TheCouncilhasalwaysmet twiceayear,andCouncilmembershavealways participatedattheirownexpense.AspecialcategoryofmembershipisHonoraryLifeMembershipwithelectionbytheAdvisoryCouncil. Mr.LeonidasT.Barrowwasthefirstmemberelected,andonly26havefollowedhimtodate. TheFoundationwasoriginallycreatedtosupporttheDepartmentofGeology.In2001,theFoundationCharterwasrevisedforthe FoundationtobeinsupportoftheJacksonSchoolofGeosciences,includingtheDepartmentofGeologicalSciences,theBureauof EconomicGeology,andtheInstituteforGeophysics.TheGeologyFoundationanditsAdvisoryCouncilhavehadaproudandimpressive recordoverthepast50years.ThelateJackJacksonsaiditwasthebestboard,byfar,thathehadeverservedon.Thatfeelingissharedby manyofhiscolleagues.AndTheUniversityandtheUniversitygeosciencecommunity—faculty,researchscientists,andstaff—havebeen andwillforeverbethegreatbeneficiaries.Fromthatearlyvision,whichwemightcalltheBarrowvision,tothefuture,whichwecancall theJacksonvision,theGeologyFoundationisaspectacularinstitution.Itisforus,thebeneficiaries,torealizethesevisions. Director, GeologyFoundationandJohnA.andKatherineG.JacksonSchoolofGeosciences GeologyNewsletter 2003 1 Letter from the Chairman This wasayearthatsawprofoundaccomplishment andtragic loss.In April, theJohnA.andKatherine G.Jackson GeologicalSciencesBuildingwasdedicated. Thisevent,markedbyaday-longsymposium,theformaldedication,and dinner, coincided withthe50thAnniversaryof theGeologyFoundation.Dedicationofthe WalterLibrary,BoydAuditorium,BarrowFamily Conference Room,JohnA.and KatherineG.Jackson ConferenceRoom,andDawsonGeophysicalCenter also occurred.In concertwiththededication,the oldsectionofthebuildingwas renovatedbytheUniversity.Inaddition,greateffort wasput intotherevamping ofthenumerousdisplaysthroughouttheentirebuilding.Theold rockstorage area(the "cage")wascompletelyrenovatedandtheold cabinetsreplacedby high-density,slidingstorageunits.TheentireJackson Buildingisnowoneof fresh,well-lighted,unclutteredspaceforteachingandresearch.Our continuing goalisforthisbuildingtoshowcase ourscience,theworkdonehere,andtobe aplacewhereboththeUT communityandthepublicfindthings ofinterestand education.Sadly,JackJacksondidnotlivetoseetheculmination ofthispart ofhisdream.Hisdeathoccurredonemonthearlier,butthespiritofhisvisionis profoundly manifested. Amonthafterthededication,theDepartmentwasstruckbyatragicloss. OneofourvansdrivingacrossWestTexasforourFieldCampcourse(GEO660) overturnedinasingle-vehicle accident.Dr.RobertK.Goldhammerand RaquelVieiradeSavariego,aBrazilianexchangestudent,werekilled. Ateachingassistantandtwoadditional studentswereinjured. All whoknew Bob recognizedhimasadynamic individual,innovativeresearcher, andgifted teacher.OurDepartment,theUTcommunity,andcolleagues,friends,andfamily ofBobandRaquelwereunitedforamemorialserviceoncampusonMay31. Inthisyear,theDepartmenthas continuedtoevolvewithin theJackson School. Thegraduate programhas expandedasweseek thebeststudents and offerthem competitivesupport.Within theJacksonbequest,theDepartmentis emergingasayetstrongerresearchbodythroughourability toprovidematching fundsforpost-docs, equipment,andresearchsupport.James Gardner from TheUniversityofAlaska atFairbanks willbejoiningus intheFallasanassociate professor,fillinga slotinthegeochemistry/petrologyprogram.JohnMcCray from theColoradoSchoolofMines willjointhefacultyaswellintheFallasanassociate professorin theareaofgeohydrology.RonSteelefromtheUniversityofWyoming joinsthefacultyastheDavisChairinPetroleumGeology.Thispositionis a replacementforBillGalloway,whohasretiredfromtheDepartmentthisyear. Inaddition,DougSmith ends"phased-retirement"tobeginofficialemeritus status. WewishBillandDougthebestinnewadventures,and wewelcome the newfacultyaboard.
