The subspecialty of genitourinary pathology (also called urologic pathology) continues to generate great clinical and academic interest, which results in a continued expansion in the knowledge base around entities encompassed within it. The World Health Organization (WHO) has just published the fourth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours of the Urinary System and Male Genital Organs, and the nomenclature and classifications promulgated through this publication are largely consistent with this offering. Further, in recent years, the International Society of Urological Pathologists (ISUP) has been very active in publishing best practices and consensus and position statements. This book incorporates the approach promoted through these publications. The second edition of Diagnostic Pathology: Genitourinary is therefore a considerably updated and revised edition, and through the authoring process, all authors have attempted five important goals. First, maintain the core goal established in the first edition of being a succinct, user-friendly, “one-stop” diagnostic compendium for the busy practicing pathologist as well as residents and fellows in training. The combination of pithy, factual, bulleted text along with rich and diverse illustrations is intended to help the pathologist arrive at the correct diagnosis, consider key differential diagnostic possibilities, and employ contemporary and judicious ancillary studies as appropriate, with reporting guidelines that enable generation of a complete and accurate surgical pathology report. Second, our very experienced author group, like other prominent academicians, travel and lecture frequently both within the United States and internationally. Our readers have been generous with compliments of the value of the book and importantly, during these educational forums, have provided feedback for improvement and refinement. We have incorporated their suggestions by including concurrent illustrations of a wide range of differential diagnoses, making our figure legends more didactic, educational, and practical, and emphasizing practical aspects about staging and assessment of prognostic factors. Third, we have updated the text in a manner reflecting the current understanding of the diseases in terms of diagnosis, prognosis, and approach to management. Fourth, we have added entirely new sections and chapters on recent entities or those previously not covered in the first edition. For example, new sections on the renal pelvis, ureter, urethra, urachus, and diverticular bladder disease, each with chapters within them, are added. Examples of new entities in the kidney include transcription elongation factor B (TCEB1)-mutated renal cell carcinoma and renal cell carcinomas occurring in the succinate dehydrogenase complex deficiency syndrome. In the bladder section, a new chapter on inverted neoplasms is included along with the aforementioned new sections. Other examples of new chapters include one on regressed (burnt-out) germ cell tumors of the testis and chapters on newer variants of penile cancer, including lymphoepithelioma-like and clear cell carcinoma. Finally, we have incorporated not only important advances in the literature, but also updated the book with recommendations from the ISUP and the WHO. The overall organization of the book in terms of the five sections, Kidney Tumors and Tumor- Like Conditions, Urinary Bladder, Prostate Gland and Seminal Vesicles, Testis and Paratesticular Structures, and Penis and Scrotum, is maintained. The authors within the teams responsible for each section are very experienced, and, apart from drawing on their own clinical experiences, the entire authorship shared ideas, approaches, concepts, and classic teaching viii DP_GU_FrontMatter_Feb.29.2016.indd 8 3/9/16 4:43 PM cases through face-to-face and phone discussions and e-mails to produce a synergistic offering. We, the editors, were additionally heavily involved over these attempts for consistency, easy readability, and practicality within each chapter at every level, from the text, tables, and illustrations to the didactic figure legends. We hope that in this refined, updated, and expanded offering of the second edition, you continue to find value in the eBook version (available on the Expert Consult platform), which is intended to add another level of desktop user-friendliness and utility beyond what the hard copy of the book may bring. Finally, this second edition of content of Diagnostic Pathology: Genitourinary will also be part of the exciting new product, ExpertPath, which provides comprehensive decision support over all pathology sites searchable among other things by entity, pathological features, or immunohistochemical findings.
